Hello all, Got a new valve in my 49 Plymouth flathead 6 and got it all put back together. Ran a new line to a portable gas tank until I can drop the other one and make sure it is clean. I am still having the same problem as I was having before my valve stuck. The car will run fine for about 10-15 mins. the starts dying. Have to use the choke to keep it running until it finally dies. Then have to choke it to restart it. Will run fine for a while again until it starts acting up again. I thought that there might have been some **** in the tank blocking the fuel line/in tank filter but that is not possible now as I am running a portable tank with a new line. Any suggestions?
Sounds to me like it is a fuel related issue... Since keeping the choke on helps it run, maybe its a lean condition? Vapor lock? Check fuel lines, make sure they are an appropriate length, and not unnecessarily close (within reason) to a significant heat source. Kinks in the fuel line on the send side can have this effect... Ask me how I know. I would also check the fuel pump. How long are you waiting before you start it back up again? Hopefully someone wiser than I will chime in soon. Good luck
It sounds stupid, but on the wife's DeSoto, i was having similar issues. After replacing the fuel pump and rebuilding the carb, the problem continued. Come to find out, it was the brand spanking new gas cap I put on wasn't venting and pressured up the tank causing vapor lock. Just my 2 cents
Mine did that too - fuel cap maybe - mine was solved with carb rebuild - all funky inside Be sure all rubber lines are new too Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I took the fuel line off after it died and there was no gas coming from the pump when I turned it over. Can a mechanical pump have on and off failure like this?
Yep if there is a piece of **** floating around inside and once in a while getting caught in one of the check valves.
Also the diaphragm inside the mech pumps degrade - try and electric pump Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Yes a fuel pump can be off or on. That is a good reason to install a filter before the pump, not just the pickup screen (tube sock) in the tank on the pickup tube. You also should get all brand new rubber fuel line. That will eliminate that piece of the puzzle. The metal line can be blown out. Start at the tank and work your way to the carb.....
10-4. I will take the pump apart tomorrow and see what I can find. I have thought about going electric as I have read vapor lock is a big problem on these cars. Thanks for all the advice.
