hello, is there anyone here who has a pontiac bonneville automatic transmition steering column manual? someting's broken (I guess!!) in mine and can't see what?? the shifter won't stay in the selected speed, I don't understand what is supposed to hold it in place!! actually I don't even know if the selected speed is hold by something in the column or in the transmission itself! after taking my column apart I can see nothing wrong!!! I have the shop manual for the car but of course there is absolutly nothing about the column!! (is it because everybody knows but me? maybe! ah ah!) help! thanx guys ps: I'm located in paris france and I have no transmission shop to go and ask!!
Look in the trasmission section. Most all A/T would have a plate inside the trans, near the shift rod, with "detent notches", with one notch for each position. Then there should be a spring loaded roller, or rod that locks into a notch to hold it there.
That trans should be a SuperHydro 4-speed, not a slim jim. Slim Jim came in the short wheelbase cars. Consider yourself lucky. There is nothing in the linkage to provide positive stops. There is a comb inside the trans to mark the different gear selections. However, there isn't much to this thing. One of the mods B+M would provide is a new detent. I'm sure if you drop the pan, the problem will be apparent inside. First make sure there isn't just all the weight from the shifter assembly pushing down on the linkage. The parts may have worn so that the shifter is too heavy for the detent to hold it if that makes sense.
When I was driving mine, the selector ball or whatever it was that gave it the detent in each gear, fell out, broke, something. It's been like 15 years, I don't recall exactly. But it was like a $2 part that I had to have a shop drop the pan to fix. I was able to drive the car, but you couldn't feel it click into each gear, so you had to be careful with it. I don't know that it ever moved on it's own but I suppose on a big enough bump it could have.
the photo of the transmission apart is quite impressive!! ther is all that stuff in? how does it fit? ah ah... thanx again... I keep you updated
hey, I just took the pan off but apparently it's not a super hydro, it's not the same shifting selection system anyway! can you help me identifying this transmission please?
