Howdy, just got a call from my friend Mark, he goes by the screen name the Hyena.....He's having some trouble with his shoebox. He was driving and then the engine dies....it's turning over but no ignition Any Hambers around La Brea and Melrose? Marks in a lilly white shoebox, he could use a hand BTW, this is posted at 6:30 pm Thanks!
bump from a hamber in that situation before...do you know if he is getting gas to the carb? is the carb leaking as if the fuel gets too hot and vaporizes and leaks from the throttle shaft? spark? electricity at all? i was in this situation not too long ago and alot of people on here responded and were really helpful...i hope he gets it goin again soon...keep us posted... tony
i don't feel i know enough about the troubleshooting of that system to give a suggestion...i mean there's the obvious things, coil, points, distributor...but i don't wanna have your buddy on the side of the road chasing ghosts...back to the top for help from someone with more experience... tony
THANKS BRYAN !! Guys my car is still out there ....i replaced the rotor the distributer cap AND the coil........STILL NO SPARK ?? i put the skrewdriver in the end of the wire and nothing ??? could it be the whole dist. ? any other ideas ?? thanks for trying........... Mark
Couple 3 things to check........ 1. Pull the cap turn the eng over and make sure the rotor is turning if not dist gear, gear pin, or cam is broken....... Had one brake the cam just before the dist gear on the cam so the rotor wouldn't turn....... also had one brake the gear off the dist 2. If that looks OK then check and see that the points are opening and at the right gap to small and to large will make it not start...... the thickness of a matchbook cover is about 16 thou.which should get you going...... If thats OK 3. check to see if you have 12v at the coil...... If you have no way to check it run a wire from the pos post on the bat to the pos post on the coil then try to start it if it runs then it's between the ing switch and the coil... just remember to shut it off if it does start you'll have to pull the wire off the bat...... All of the above is on the assumtion it was running and driving when it quit The way I understood the post it was MM64
I had that happen to a car once while driving on the 605 Frwy and after towing it I discovered the Ign. wire had fallen off the back of the ignition switch...
I have had the problem with the coil itself, and then agin with the coil wire. with the coil wire I just use a plug wire till I got home it missed a bunch but got me home. Useless
The wire from the points to the coil can ground inside the distributor, hard to spot on the side of the road. Cosmo
I had The original Ford fiber cam gear loose it's teeth going about 55 MPH. The engine will sound different when cranking...no compression. If the rotor doesn't turn with the engine, it's probably not a roadside fix.
