ever try your local farm bureau? they'll insure any car, but anything older than 10 years they'll only do liability and uninsured motorist. there also a damn sight cheaper than most, which is important at 23.

Try Sneed, or Great American's Classic insurance. I got Great American through my Nationwide agent. Same old restrictions and crap, but it let me stack it with my regular car policies, adding all the liability limits together so I've got $1 million plus instead of just the usual $100K/30K.

Try State Farm. They have special policys for custom and antique autos. You just pay a premium for how much the car is valued at. I was having trouble with all the big companies because of mileage limits. State Farm has no mileage limits.

why did they all turn you down?

  6. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the age requirement for classic car insurance is 30 and up.

Try insuring it as a stock truck,no need to call it a rod. If your looking for comprehensive some of the specialty co`s should be able to help. Your not in a good age bracket just hang in it`ll get better. Jerry:D

I had the same problem. The big thing is your age when I got insurance for my car they made me sign a letter saying that my wife who was 24 at the time wouldn't be driving the car. I was also turned down because my car wasn't finshed and I planed drive it to many miles a year. You may want to tell the people you call that your truck is just a old truck not a hot rod that throw up red flags tell them you only are going to drive it a couple hundred mile a year. You may also want to go back to the people that insure you daily driver tell them you just need the least coverage for you truck or you will take your business somewhere else. If you need more advise call me I'll fill you in.

I had that same problem ( too young, 23) to qualify for classic insurance. Except for one company who sent me an application and told me to send money and then they would FOR SURE insure me. Anyway, I went to my daily driver insurer and they hooked me up with insurance for a month until I could find a different carrier and so I could get my tags. I didn't find that carrier and got caught up at school for a couple months, so I let the insurance expire. Finally got some time to get back to the car, and I went to reinsure it. They told me that they won't insure a car that has been without insurance for any length of time unless I can produce some reciepts of major work done to restore it to drivable condition. They recommended that I go to geico or nationwide and insure it at twice the price. bastards. I'm in the same boat so I'll be watching this thread. Thanks for the help.

Excellent, I just went to http://www.americanhobbyist.com and did the instant quote... $68/year, and I don't have to lie to meet their restrictions (which was one of my qualifications)! I ordered up their application form... Thanks for posting about them Squigy!

  14. geico=gigantic ripoff. 3x what i pay now.

give mercury a ring. look for an independent agent not a brokerage house.
they insured my 60 daily, my wifes firebird, and the said no problem on the t bucket. just bring it down so we can take a picture...
granted its just liability, but that will have to do for now

How many miles per year do you plan on driving Jeffie? I have my insurance through JC Taylor and specified 5000 miles per year on the application. I was also very specific and honest with what I think my car is worth. No sweat with anything. If your driving record is blemished I could see an issue. If it's not, I doubt the age thing has too much to do with it. Other than the fact that someone wants to rake you over the coals for being a "youngster"...

its all about your age dude..

NO one wants a 23 year old driving a "HOTROD" here on the east coast.. especially no one formarly known as "gayjeff"

I too was turned down BY EVERY insurance co when I was 21, and then 22 and 23 and on and on.. the A-holes at sneed (or is it GREED?) especially pissed me off.. (i WILL NEVER INSURE ANYTHING WITH THAT COMPANY)

I'm 24 and have a "in progress street rod" I got the policy Last year when I was 23. They didn't really give me a hard time about it. They said they like to see the "in progress stuff" completed within 2 years - it will be close @ this rate. My premium is a little High compared to others for the same type of insurance but I expected it as i'm 24. And if my garage burns down or is broken into..my truck is covered, even though it is in pieces.

I think the guy said 4k miles/year is about the max they want to see....but i've known several other people who have had hagarty who said that they never check the milage from year to year.

the thing i like about hagarty is "AGREED VALUE" policy. if you insure tha car for $20k and it is totalled they'll give you $20k (and yes they actually do cause i know someone who's car burnt to the ground and they gave him a check for the full policy amount...and even offered to let him buy it back)

Any other companies that have been suggested do the "Agreed Value"
If you apply for insurance and they ask on the application "will you use the vehicle for any type of racing event?" - this includes nostalgia drags that you might do once or twice a year...so answer NO!!!!!! AonCollector Insurance denied me on that simple question....I was only trying to be honest and i knew the policy would cover a loss if it happened during a racing event anyway..and didn't expect it too..so i don't know why they care about that...they should just put it in thier policy that the vehicle is not covered @ any racing type of event......
Hagerty's Policy does say that....i actually read the whole thing to make sure i wasn't getting screwed

I was always denied because you need a "normal" car with insurance besides your "Classic"

I live in a city. I use mass transit. Any ride in my car is an event. They couldn't (wouldn't) understand that. I've never been in a an accident, but it doesn't matter.

Now I have three cars. I have my 68 Ford pickup insured as a "normal" car. My Allstate agent told me when I added my 55 that they needed an appraisal and pictures of the car for the policy. I'll check if they have a decent plan for her, but expect to go to one of the companies mentioned above. I like the 'agreed value' concept. Not planning on taking advantage of it, I just hope there is a company that understands my car is not a means for transportation, but actually my heart and soul.

I do have 14 points on my license though. That may be a problem. For now my 55 and 60 are insured through Allstate as regular cars with liability only. I consider it just another cost of living the way I want, to have to pay the extra money, and take the risk. If someone steals my cars or fucks it up, it's my problem and there isn't anything i can do about it today. If I hit someone I'm fucked, so I don't hit anyone. If it happens, it's my fault.

I understand that if I want to continue my lifestyle of driving on sidewalks and doing smokey burnouts on my way out of the bar at 2:30 AM, I better have money in the bank and an attorney that comes running when I call!

dont know where you are located- Our agent who is Grundy (www.demarey.com ) would be glad to find out exactly why you were turned down for you.He is a personal friend too I know Grundy requires a locked garage for storage, JC has a mileage restriction and your age actually MAY have something to do with it. do you have a list of past tickets a mile long?

A pal was turned down due to escessive tickets- they thought he was a risk.

Hagerty................best there is, had them for years, no milage linitations but i believe you gotta be at least 24. Zero deducible comp and 24 hrs a day 7 days a week roll back coverage,( covers part of it).
I only deal with the home office 1-800-947-6868. Guy here in town is difficult to work with. Home office staff is great.. I think the premimuns are based on a dollar value you put on the car, if its over like $20K they have you get it apprised.

Age is the problem....get a regular policy until you qualify for a "special" policy....don't be pissed...I paid $1100.00 per year "IN 1964" for liability on my '53 Olds...it's part of life...

  22. I have Hagerty, agreed value policy. I don't know about age, but you do have to have a registered and insured "daily" for each licensed driver in the household, above and beyond your hot rod. Go through the website and deal with the home office. They're good peeps.
