What are the differences in 1939 and 40 coupe bodies? 1) windshield 2) door vent windows 3) dash 4) 39 std cowl and 39 deluxe & all 40 cowls From my searching this is all of the differences I could find. Is that it??
The inside of the lower outer edge of door window opening on a 39 is smooth all the way across the bottom. The 40 has a small indentation in the bottom inside edge at the rear of the wing window where the front of the roll up window stainless bar goes up and down. There is also a small difference in the curvature of the bottom of the front fender in the area below the hole where the bumper braces go through and the center grille area. Obvious exterior trim differences.
You guys missed the windshield wiper and radio antennas. 39' wipers are on top of the windshield. Antenna's are in a different position, 39's fold back onto the windshield and 40's can be lowered by sliding them down.. The firewalls are different at the toe board also.
Yes, "windshield wipers". '39 are above the windshield, '40 below in cowl. And, the wheel bolt circles are also brake drums are quite different.
'39 was the last year with crank-out windshields and cowl vents. Lots of little things, like the various Ford and V8 badges, trunk handle, etc.
40's has cowl vents actually the same part as 39's. This thread is going adrift as the question was 39-40 bodies, not all the differences in the entire car.
The 40 used the same cowl vent as a 39. This thread has gone adrift as the question was only about bodies.
not really gone adrift...as the mounting points for the windshield are totally different for instance...so the structure may be different. I've recently been modifying a pair of Drake 40 doors to fit a 39 coupe. Swapped over the entire inner frame section as the mounting for the window mech was all different , also the method of attaching the inner garnish was changed that year...had to change that too... and so it goes on...lots of differences!!
Thanks for the info. I have bought a rust free 40 4-door sedan. Have talked to Carpenter about their coupe body. Getting it delivered to the house increases the price by 15%. Not sure if I want to spend that much money. I have been thinking about trying to find a 39-40 rusty coupe and use my floor and doors on it.
Anything is possible, but if you have to pay for the body work, I'd buy the Carpenter body, and sell the 4dr to someone who wants it.
In what ways is a 39 std coupe cowl different from a 40 coupe cowl? Just the wiper location? Or is there something else that is materially different?
I just bought a 39 coupe body and is in rough shape, what is the diference in the cowl area? can i use 40 standard front clip instead of finding a 39?
The sheetmetal where the dash mounts and the windshield opening itself . If you use a '39 tip out windshield, you're ok. If you need to see, I can send some pics. PM me and I can get them tommorrow.
Another easy way to tell a '39 Standard is the radiator "steady rod" brackets at top of firewall. '39 DeLuxe did not have those. DD
Anyone know if the 38 or 39 truck hood and sides fit the 38 or 39 coupe? I am looking to put the truck nose on my coupe body and wondering how much modification it will take.
