1940 Chevy brake dilemma on 29 Pontiac

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Double Drat, Nov 10, 2012.

  1. Ive got 40 Chevy front spindles (3654435), drums and backing plates.I have adapted these to a 29 Pontiac ibeam. Also have a set of 6 stud 19" Chev wires i want to run.
i adapted these and then realised that i have no brake hardware (the scissor type arms that join the huck brake shoes) and it is hard to come by, and inferior to bendix upgrade.

I am looking for advise on where to next on the brakes.

Should i keep searching for complete brake hardware and go with the huck or is there a conversion i can do whilst retaining the 6 lug drum- this is a deal breaker for me has i really want to keep 6 lug. i understand the later bendix setup has 2" shoes that are too wide; has anyone tried another bendix shoe that may fit/work with a bit of mod. that is 1 3/4?

On the crazy idea front; has anyone ever cut down 2" shoes to 1 3/4?
(I really don't want disc brakes)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Maybe 55-59ish Chevy half ton truck brakes? I know these are still 6 lug.

  3. thanks 41hemi sounds like a good fix, will check it out

  4. Can anyone confirm that the 55-59 Chevy 1/2 ton brake setup will fit my spindles, have been unable to find out for sure, someone must have attempted this before...
    thanks.

Did the brakes earlier this year on this '40 Chevy Coupe... As previously stated I got all I needed From Kanter Auto... Is a car that is street driven on weekends, worked out fine... A light car like your '29 should be real good with those brakes... NOTHING wrong with drum brakes.... That's all I own!! :):):)

    from Yakima WA.

If you are looking for Bendix brakes, 51-54 would work too. If the Huck brakes are what you looking for, then almost anything pre-51 should fit. If you search the HAMB for "chev brakes" there are a lot of posts on these.

  8. Thanks for your helpful responses.
I checked out Kanter website they had almost all i need, except for the link arms between the shoes. I am sure some will come up if i keep looking.I will email them today.
So as its only a weekend car anyhow i am sure i can handle the frequent adjusting of the huck brakes. They will be stopping an inline 216 Chevy motor, the Pontiac split head six is a garden ornament now.
in the meantime i can keep my eyes peeled for a cheap 51-54 or 55-59 1/2 ton setup.
    thanks again..
