Just rebuilt a new French flat head 276 etc, runs real nice. But did a timing check and didn't really believe it till my tuning guru confirmed it. Watched the timing I set a 8 degrees @ idle slowly advance to 26degrees @ 2600 then about 2700 it snaps to about 38 degrees ,,What the heck. Every time it did this regularly. Have we wired it incorrectly???? New MSD ready to run dist. And new MSD 6BTM control box. Disconnected the box and car runs great no "ping" pulls real well. So guess the 6BTM we bought a year ago before using is a dud. Suppose we will fit blower with no MSD and a vacuum can instead.
Normal MSD ready to run problem! Over the years it seems the ready to run with the box 1 in 2 will be rubbish and cause a lot of problems before someone thinks to check the ignition! We then fix the problem by throwing the MSD in the bin, and replacing it with ICE, this is more for drag stuff and street machines so the nostaligic sentimentalities arent a concern!
Here's what I have done. Dual point Mallory dist, remove the secondary/ trailing point ans us the primary to trigger the msd box. Check the curve/ adv plate to make sure it's all kosher. Set and forget been running that way for 7 yrs without a problem. There is no current to wear out the point- it's simply a " switch" to trigger the MSD 6 BTM. Simple, reliable and works and have done this on 2 cars without any issues My 2 c
sounds like a typical Mallory from factory, set wrong you need to reset to around 20degrees max with blower........... and set at around 4 degrees static
Does turning the knob change anything? Has the distrib curve been checked on a machine?also some timing lights will act goofy on a mad box too.
