Just a simple question, I'm mounting a 390 on a custom tube ch***is but when I level the motor with the intake (degree level sitting on the carb base) it seems as if the engine is running down hill (back is tilted down.) If I level it with the crank the intake is tilted way forward. I've done a lot of chevy stuff in race cars, never a FE. I've always leveled with the intake and adjusted a few degrees for the trans output angle. Any FE masters suggestions?
I have leveled the intake/carb. mounting surface. That should give you a 5 degree or so angle for the crank. Good luck with the FE engine.
With the exception of the T-Birds, most all factory FE cars were mounted on a fairly steep downward angle (towards the rear). If the steep angle bothers you or presents a problem with your application, you could always use a T-Bird manifold. The carb base angle is flat level on those to accommodate the level mounting on Birds.
Thanks Bob, that was the answer I was looking for, "normally downward swoop." I just wanted to make sure that was normal for this type of engine.
Ford had a wedged carb spacer with port for pcv valve.I used one to level both trans and carb at same time.I believe for mid 70's 390.I trimmed inside out to fit larger holley.Worked well!
