If this forum didn't exist, who knows, maybe I'd be one of those dudes that welds spider web grilles and other ***orted garbage to a perfectly good A coupe, just because it's the polar opposite of the 80s-90s pro street/billet-laden streetrod thing. Thanks for helping to put some actual style and taste in this hobby.
I hope my previous post didn't sound like a put down. I started hanging around here in '99. Last century, man. It has been big time fun to watch Ryan's writing on the JJ expand and mature. The HAMB has become huge, but still feels like a good place to go, most of the time. Maybe the best contribution of the JJ and the HAMB, is that is is sort of the Snopes.com of old style rods and customs. The well of knowledge is deep here. The well of ******** is deep, also. But the truth usually appears, even if it's ignored by some. People who really know will chime in. So, thanks for the words, Bro. I do appreciate it.
I think I'm with you man... I think my writing was embarr***ingly juvenile - and not really in a cool way. Not that I'm much better now, but at least I don't use as many exclamation points!!!!!
Ryan, you're doing the Lords work. Remember how tough it was for guys like Winfield and Hines in the 70's when no one remembered their names, their cars, and everyone wanted a custom van? (Anyone remember AMBR 1969?). Praise God the Bill Hines and Gene Winfields are still here, p***ing the torch and more admired then ever. Even George Barris (and The Aztec) are still with us. I'd be lost without HAMB.
I enjoy your writing & everything else about the HAMB (almost). Thank you Ryan for all that you do, have done & continue to do for us.
Thanks Ryan for starting this forum - I hope you get rewarded in every way for your vision and efforts. Cheers.
I love it that you posted that!!! It does us all some good to look back and see where we were and how far this has all come. A lot has changed but in a good way. Back then and when I first got on the old HAMB, I had 48 Plymouth coupe that I had adorned with every, current, "popular" traditional part that I could find....... Fat wide whites in the rear and skinny up front with over the frame headers and a 283 with Olds valve covers, a tall swan shifter and side pipes with Smittys on them. I almost attached a 50's Thunderbird style hood scoop on it, was planning a chop and of course, had red rims.....I didn't know what direction I was going except for too many all at once and didn't have a lot of real feedback or advice (except from GERM)! Custom, rod, g***er...yep, a little bit of all rolled into one big eye sore of a car!!! I was all revved up with zero guidance or checks from myself or true tradition!! Anyways....thank you for your efforts over the years and for saving tradional hotrodding from the likes of me!!
No need to humble yourself sir. Our appreciation for what you have created is more than deserved. You had a vision. You chased it. It evolved through the years, but ultimately had an impact on our culture in the positive. Your writing is always the best part of the daily briefing.
That makes you really old!! Thanks man, the hamb is part of my life. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Cool as ever ... All done in capital letters P***ED ON A TRACTOR GRILL AT AUCTION TODAY THAT WAS IN GOOD SHAPE ...
Christmas 1995, really? Wow, it doesn't seem that long ago. I think i knew about it in 1998 or so, didn't really care then, was too wrapped up in bicycles to pay much attention. But then Paul Howard finished his car in 1999 or something, and brought it by my dad's one night when I was there. I was never the same after that. And I found the HAMB again in '01 or something. Time flies when you're having fun, I guess. Thanks for the glimpse at the yearbook. At least your hair isn't parted in the middle anymore...
WHY WOULD YOU TYPE THAT!? DAMN YOU GOOGLE IMAGES! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY EYES!? In all seriousness, thank you Ryan for all the time you put in to the HAMB. I've met some of the best people I know and had some of my life's most memorable experiences because of this place. The first Journal entry I remember reading was one about you going to the barber; ring any bells? I have not had any luck locating it in the archives.
"Regardless, we’re still here bringing you the digs – jalopies, pinups, art, and grease, everything that makes you roll out of bed, roll your jeans, tune the billy, and grab a gear."-Ryan Despite the somewhat naff description, some of us poor unfashionable SOB's still live like that. While were having a laugh, here's me and an old band circa 1991.
X2 And I was driving the old 40 Ford coupe above. I need to find me another 40 Ford coupe before I take the dirt nap
*******!! That is so cool, Ryan! You are too hard on yourself, the writing is just as good as now, you are simply coming from a better place now. Fantastic stuff!
