anyone else?? after a while, i get this sticky nasty film that builds up in a funky pattern on the inside of the windows of my 60 chevy. its kinda brown and smells funky. i usually scrape it off with a razorblade. any idea what it is?? i dont smoke so that aint it. the car is outside almost always... anyone, anyone??
That's usually the plastic "out-gassing"...it releases chemicals into the air that stick on the window...always had that on my 50/60's cars....
Quite possibly oil film from the engine bay. Unplugged holes in a firewall will most definately have this effect.
After a night at the "submarine races" I used to leave the windows cracked so the smell went away... then dose everything with windex togive it a good sterilization... that should do it... Sam.
That usually goes away after a couple years, though...About when the vinyl is all dried out and starts cracking. This might still be true if the car's been reupholstered in "original" type materials but I'd also suspect a leaking heater core... Funky smell mentioned? leaking heater core fluid on a carpet backing will give off an odor that's best described as smelling like the trash can in a ladies rest room on a hot day... (No, don't go around sniffing them, just worked in enough "entry level" restaurant jobs to have been stuck with emptying them.)
heater core has been dry and capped as long as i've owned the car. no gaping holes in the firewall. car was repholstered in vinyl and velour. i took the back seat out a long time ago. maybe gas vapor particulates coming thru the trunk?? flippers?? i must be gay. went right over my head.
When I was a pup in the 60's, my summer job was reconditioning cars at the local GM dealership. We mixed up the GM windshield washer concentrate and ammonia to get that stuff off. It was worse in a smoker's car, kind of gummy. But they all had it.
Oh man... I wish you knew how funny that was... Now it sounds like you need Windex AND upholstry cleaner... The origin of "the flipper"... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68249 Nothin' personal, it's just so fuckin' funny... JOE
Yeah, it's the vinyl and foam from the upholstery job 'out-gassing' - that is bleeding off chemicals and plasticizers. It'll eventually go away, but by then the vinyl's dried out and needs to be replaced. When heat builds up in the car, the gas comes out. Sorta like my colon after too much Frank's Red Hot sauce on my red beans and rice.
flipper.....got it. gay, right over my head....got it. (note to self: read EVERY post so as not to leave self wide open) anyway, the gassing out thing makes sense. my car sits in the sun a good part of the day. the sticky icky has been less since i started leaving the windows half open....
I had that on my 64 belair windows too, its from leaving the windows closed in the heat, damm these old chevys cook inside! i couldnt even see thru the windshield in mine.
plasticizers, baby! my 69 chrysler had that problem real bad. try class stripper (nothing too harsh).
Yeah I've got that on my 60 chevy. Haven't noticed if it's sticky. Mines more like stains that wont come out. No matter how much I clean the glass, shit just doesnt go away. I've gotta check to see if it's filmy.....bugs the shit outta me!!!
