I bought a set of older mechanical guages at Pistons and Paint the other day. When I first looked at the water temp gauge I thought it was broke since the needle wasnt all the way to the bottom of the scale. When I looked closer I saw that the range was from 40 to 220 degrees and it was reading the actual ambient temp. It may not be as unusual as I think but this is the very first one I have ran across. Most modern guages have like a 100 to 250 range. The original temp guage in my '50 Chevy tops out at 220 also so I am wondering if it is from the 50's or 60's era. Its a br*** gauge with the flat gl***.
The small SW logo and white pinter means 60's for sure. I have a couple sw gauges that read from 60 to 240, they made them that way for some reason, not sure why though.
Yeah I bought it from a guy I know and he said that it was up to 90 the other day in his shop so I'm pretty sure its accurate. I got a matching 100lb oil pressure gauge and ampmeter with it too.
pretty typical back in 'the day'. Why cram up the gauge with low numbers that nobody cares about when it's much more important to register the higher temps. Makes it a lot more legible. Don't even know why they went to Zero Bottom gauges - who needs to know when the water temperature is 15°??
I think some boat stuff ran at cooler temps, thats why some of the twin blue water temps are lower temps like that one too, at least thats what i think. jeff
***us is Correct. some boat gauges ran an input and output water temp gauge. If the inlet water temp was too cold, you could adjust the flow rate to keep the thermostat (If you ran one) from opening and closing constantly. I like it !
I bought an old Ensign dash out of a junk Chris Craft wooden boat back in the 70's and it had Stewart Warner gauges,,this is what it looked like and the temperature started low like the one posted. HRP
I realize this is a posting from 2012, but.... I need one of these gauges. Does anyone have one they can do without?
Patience Gr***hopper. At 12:53 you asked if anyone had one that they'd part with and at 12:54 you say that you are still in need of one. Things don't always happen that fast around here!
There is a specific name for that style gauge . I for the life of me don’t remember what it is . But when you have a dash full of them at a glance the indicator pointer will be at the top while operating in the normal range , so it only takes a glance to determine if you are inline for a moonshot .
