Going to Moultrie next weekend. First timer. I am looking mainly for 1956 Ford Truck sheetmetal parts. Any advice on hunting strategy? I hear it is to much to see in one day. I will be there Friday thru Mid day Saturday. Any and all walking advice appreciated. These legs arent 20 years old anymore
Donald, you CAN do it in a day.....as long as it's not SATURday(there's so many people it's hard to see stuff.) Be there when the gate opens Friday(8? I think) Wear comfortable shoes. Don't waste time looking at the car corral, cause you'll wanna buy 3 or 4. Grab one of those map/program/booklets(it's good to know where the bathrooms are!) My "experience"(opinion?) is most vendors are repeats from years past, and the "new" guys with new stuff(treasures?) will be all the way to the right after you enter the gate---doesn't matter, new or old---there's plenty of rusty cra--uh, FINE merchandise everywhere. Some of these guys are ******** and won't negotiate much cause they're taking the same stuff to Daytona the next week, so... Say hi to BenD and Brian/kustom52. Wish I was going And bring me back a 56 cab and doors
Good deal Mike, thanks for the advice. I just came from a little swapmeet down in Shelbyville. Met a guy there who goes every year who lives close. He said it is a 6 hr drive. Cross your fingers for me finding a set of good doors. Thanks
6? More like 8..... How was Calsonic? I'm stuck at the shop today or I might have gone(gotta work when ya GOT work! )
Mike, I got there at 7:00am to Calsonic and it was pretty light vendor wise. No green came out of my pocket other than the admission. Will call you probably midweek and get a few more pointers on how to tackle Moultrie. Thanks
theres more parts there than you'll see in one place all year... I've never been able to see everything..and I've tried. Been the first in the gate and made to leave that night..feet hurt and arm five inches longer from towing that wagon all day. OH don't forget your wagon...that place is to big to be toating stuff .
Get there EARLY!!! All the good stuff gets gone quick. Thats the best advise I have, and it comes from years of experience with Moultrie. Great swap meet though.
The Ford Sheetmetal selection decent at this meet or is it a hit and miss type thing? @ Only Chevrolet have you gone with one thing in mind and have you been more of a browser? Just curious. Thanks for the shoe tips. Getting the sneakers ready. Going to check the weather forecast Wednesday evening
If you see somethig you like grab it dont say I will come back later it will be gone. Thats what we do. We dont stop for anythig but what we came for. If we find what we want then we cruise and enjoy.
As a long time visitor to Moultrie both Spring and Fall meets. Most guys will hold and anything that you buy. The restrooms are at the tower and in the back middle building. We usually take it a section at a time working from one side to the other and front to back. You can cover it in one day but it is tough. As the others said get in early. If the weather is nice it will be a mad house. They dont allow golf carts but you can get permits for scooters. Here is the link to their site http://www.moultrieswapmeet.com/ Enjoy and Good Luck
Swapmeet advice-general. Make a list of what you are hoping to find and a reasonable price you are willing to give. Take some handtrucks with a tote strapped to it to carry parts, along with some extra straps or bungies. Carry some extra shoes and socks with you in case you get wet or just a good change for your feet. If you have a part in your hands you really need, BUY IT! Find the wife a gift before you go home! tnrotter
here is the most important imfo you can use, watch the weather, if a cold front come through it can be the coldest place on earth, seems the wind blows all across that airport if its 40 or below all day long, its a cold cold place , be prepaired.....
That's sorta my plan if it is not 56 Ford truck DOORS or Cab. I keep movin' Thanks for the advice Keep the advice coming
I went to Moultrie last fall and they were renting scooters at the gate and inside. The ones inside looked newer. As we get older sometimes we have to use the options available to use. I travel with a friend who has lost a leg so these types of option go along way toward where we go together.
My first time there, we stayed on the grounds with our motorhome to get an early start. We could not do a serious search in one day, and if my memory is correct, they charge a daily rate. We spent two days, and as said earlier, Saturday is a zoo. We went to Daytona the following week-end and met saw many of the same vendors. The good stuff sells fast. Have fun!!!
I've not been to Moultrie in quite a few years. Needing a few things for my Caddy. Are there more vendors that show up Saturday than you will see on Friday? And do they clear out before Sunday and you would see fewer vendors Sunday?
I have been going to this swap meet for as long as I can remember. Go early Friday= best selection Go early Sunday= best prices ( some vender dont want to pack it all back up) When you enter the gate to to your far right that will be the Parts area, I always start with parts and work my way accross to the left finishing with the cars for sale, its an all day event or more depending what you are looking for. It is the best swap meet in this area. Godspeed MrC.
Do they have parts haulers like they do at Daytona? If they do pay them a tip to haul big parts back to your truck, it's worth it! That way you don't have to haul a wagon or dolly through the crowd-****s in my opinion. Carry a lightweight granny grocery cart for medium parts if you have to. You can by one there $25. You'd be amazed what they will hold. If you are with someone have a meeting place/ time if you get split up-low or no phone service. Yes, overdress in layers it seems get cold there for some reason. A lot of stuff is overpriced- don't be scared to bid low and hopefully meet in the middle, like already said if it's real nice and what you need, pay a little more than you thought and get it, you will regret it if you don't! I ALWAYS do! BTDT
Coolers are ok ,wagons a must. lip gloss good ,hat another must. Patience. Have change. Remember the vendor can't leave his spot to get change. Don't drop a Ben on the man for a 5 buck purchase. I was a vendor for years, and just got too old . Lot of work loading and unloading.
there are saying upper 60's winds 10 to 15 from the nne it will be cool. coolers are ok if you drink beer keep in a wrap bring good shoes i will be in f 18 with a 57 that needs a new home and some parts
"We went to Daytona the following week-end and met saw many of the same vendors. The good stuff sells fast." Exactly. Those vendors that are going on to the Turkey Rod Run are not too anxious to negotiate a whole bunch on parts or in the car corral. Smart buyers know they are getting the first pick on stuff.
