    I think to plan a vacation in california / arizona from 22.dec - 08.january.
Need some help and information from locals.
There are any shows, swap meet, partys in the cities?
Point of interest (old diners, old gas stations, ...)?
    Junkyards?
    Drag race?
    BBQ Party?
H.A.M.B. Members meet and greet ...
Low priced lodging - Coach surfing
Where is the best place to stay for new year´s eve?

    Roadtrip:
Los Angeles - San Diego - Yuma - Tucson - Phoenix - Los Angeles

My last vacations in the US was full of great informations from the H.A.M.B. Members. I have seen a lot of beautiful places ...

    Regards from Austria / Europe

Any chance you can come a little earlier?
    11/23: GoodGuys at Del Mar
    11/24: Bo Huff at Riverside
    12/8: MoonEyes at Irwindale
These are some of the best shows of the year!

Every Friday afternoon, late, you can go by Bob's Big Boy in Burbank. x2 for Donut Derelicts. Not much going on for the dates you've scheduled.

  5. can´t come earlier ... I have only a few days free time - thats the bad situation ;)

On your Phoenix to LA run, head north out of Phoenix to the Grand Canyon, then up to Bruce Canyon in South Central Utah, down to Zion National Park (my back yard) in South West Utah, south west to Las Vegas, and back to LA.

At that time of year, we are all doing our winter vacation stuff, with Christmas and New Years celebrations...many people are visiting relatives. So we don't have many car activities going on.

  9. @daddio211: sounds good ... but I would like make this roadtrip to utah and around utah next year (hopfully).

@toml24: thanks for the info to the car museum - also the donut derelict meeting is on my schedule. Early in the morning, drink coffee and eat donuts and talk to the people, I like it.

@squirrel: thanks for the info ... christmas time is family time. Its also interesting for me to see how the americans celebrat there xmas time. Austria is so much different in this time, its cold, snow and its mostly twilight.

I know there is a great junkyard in Casa Grande (http://www.dvap.com/) ... at my last trip the junkyard was closed. I came to late to this place.
Anyone know also junkyards like this close to Los Angeles, San Diego, Yuma, Benson, ...
I like the homepage www.roadsideamerica.com, there are not so much touristic things, there are more fun and interesting things.
Anyone know is there any other homepage like this?

Search also for TIKI Bars; Best Steak House in Town; Country Bar; Antique Stores; ...

There are two junkyards with some old cars down near where I live, Fort Auto Parts in Huachuca City. The crazy old man died recently, I hear the daughter has been selling stuff, but I don't have any contact info. Also Ralph's, sort of nearby, Ralph died several years ago and his son has been running it, I haven't been out there for a while to see what they still have.

Oh, and if you do have time, take daddio211's suggestion. If you don't have time, make it! Absolutely the prettiest scenery the West has to offer.

Like Squirrel said Tombstone or Bisbee...I did travel nursing in Tucson for a month and another 5 months in Ganado on the Navajo Rez working 6 days and off for 8 days and we would go and try and see everything on every 8 days we were off...so I was off 16 days out of the month and still was not able to do or see all the things in AZ...truly an awesome state

When you get to Yuma, you can check out the cloud museum. http://cloudmuseum.dynamitedave.com/location.html

There is a 50's style diner called Pennys, an IN-N-OUT and other burger places. There is a place down town called Arizona Teds that has an ok small collection of old cars in it. Lute's Casino down town is an old casino turned into a diner and has TONS of cool and weird stuff on the walls and ceiling. There are several antique/collectable shops in town, the neatest being The Pack Rats Den. They have quite a bit of cool stuff from the 20s-60s. You could check out the Yuma Territorial Prison http://azstateparks.com/Parks/YUTE/index.html.

Not much else going on around here really. Feel free to PM me if you want someone to grab a bite to eat or see the sights with.

not car gigs but cool points of interest--Yuma state prison, Tombstone and following old Rte 66 from Cali/Az border to Oatman(walk with the donkeys) and then up to Kingman

  21. Friday, 21th dec we arrive in los angeles, airport.
We would like drive close to the place from the "Donut Derelicts". Anyone know a cool diner or sportsbar close to the adams ave? I was 2 or 3 years ago in a hotel close to this place of the "donut derelicts". Close to this hotel was a "surf bar". But I can´t remember this place. Anyone know this "surf bar"?

sunday, 23th december we stop at Solana Beach - Belly Up Tavern. Cash´d Out http://www.cashdout.com/ plays in Belly Up Tavern. Anyone there?

As mentioned the Utah trip should be done sometime. Did it on 2 wheels years ago, it was great.
Route 66 from Seligman Az. to Calif. border is the longest remaining stretch of the road. Seligman is very kitschy but still cool. Another stop on the way is in Hackberry (dont blink) mostly a tourist stop. Theres a "cl***ic car" resale lot just before you get to Kingman. Mostly rusty project cars but he has some interesting ones. And I dont know which is better, the road to Oatman or Oatman & the donkeys. The road is a absolute blast on 2 wheels.

  23. @57custom300: thanks for info. I have seen this area from my last roadtrips - but my colleage is the first time in the west us. I think we would like show him also seligmen and kingmen - also when we have time, we would like show him vegas. will see how much time we have ...

In my opinion just the sales tax differential is one factor to take into account. Most AZ counties about 4-6%. In southern California 8-10.5% is more common. They also charge tax in RV Park spots too in California. I don't know about AZ. The "New Car tax" in California is now double that of any other state in the Union. Annual license fees are really high too.

Lots of museums too. Petersen in LA. RIAM in Riverside. NHRA in Pomona. Marconi (by appointment only) in Tustin. Dan Gurneys in Santa Ana. Nethercutt in Sylmar. San Diego Automotive Museum. All these are in SoCal. I'm sure there are others I've left out.

Haven't been myself as I generally work new years eve but it's supposed to be a good time.

Here in central AZ we have a local access cable tv show that is accompanied by a monthly newspaper called Roddin' and Racin' ... YMMV on its quality but the paper does have a calendar of events that is pretty comprehensive. You can go to their web page at http://roddinandracintv.com/ to access either the tv show or latest issue of their paper. The calendar is near the end of the paper.
