I have a 34 chevy three window coupe I am getting ready to start building. Right now I am in the process of gathering parts and trying to make room in the garage. I recently acquired, FREE on craigslist, a brand new set of duece rails! Has anybody on here built a car like this? I believe I have to lengthen the frame by about seven inches. I am by no means an expert car builder, but I do know how to cut and weld metal. Any pictures, thoughts, comments, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Depends on what you want to build, but you might be better off with a 34 Chevy frame. The Chevy guys on here can tell you whether they repop them.
It's going to be a fenderless hot rod, so I think I can use pretty much whatever frame I want, especially since I have to build a whole new floor anyhow. Plus I got the rails for free, so that really would add to the low buck build.
I absolutely agree with you that Chevy frames are ugly, especially compared to the duece frame. I know I'm gonna piss off some of the Chevy guys who say keep your Chevy all Chevy, but I'm piecing the car together anyhow, so I don't see any reason not to use the duece rails. They look *****in on your 33. Did you have to alter the length of the frame?
Somebody gave you repro 1932 Ford frame rails for free? Sounds like a great combo. I was just talking with a Plymouth-oriented buddy about a '34 coupe he wanted to build as a highboy. I suggested he couldn't go wrong putting it on a '32 Ford frame. Hard to make an oddball car look bad when it's on a '32 Ford frame.
Sounds like a plan to me. I'm sure the deuce rails will look swoopier than the old chevy rails...here's a photo of my old 33 chevy coupe with original frame..see all that rusty metal below the decklid ? That's a HUGE chevy crossmember of stamped 10 gauge steel..mucho oogly. And the side rails don't follow the bottom of the body like a deuce frame does but I believe a 33-35 chevy is quite a bit wider through the middle than a 32 ford and I'll bet a pair of 32 ford rails will need to be pie-cut and welded to conform to the pronounced "coke bottle" shape of the 34 chevy versus the relatively mild 'swell' of a 32 ford. It's gona be a lotta work. You'll know more after taking a tape measure to both the body and the 32 rails.
I've seen a 33-34 Chevy coupe that was builit on 33-34 Ford rails and the bottom contour of the body looked like it matched alot better than it would a 32 frame.
It actually conforms fairly well from what I can tell by holding the rails up next to the body (squeezing around all the other **** in my shed) but I do think I will need to change the shape towards the rear of the body, along with lengthening it.
Hey it is your car so you do whatever it takes as far as I am concerned . A mix and match of parts, pieces from various manufactures ***embled in a safe structuraly sound manner pleaseing to your eyes is fine. You are the owner and builder. At least that is the way I am building mine and what I think about It.
That car looks killer! Love the radical chop. I looked at your build and that 36 is bad*** as well!! Very nice work!!
Here are a couple shots of my 1933 /3 window a coupe. This was at a small town parade a few weeks before are Raisin Day Event. We come to theirs they come to ours you get it. Let me know if I can help. Jim
