Hope this is a new thread, I couldn't find what I was looking for in the searches I did. I have had a couple Model A's and a '63 Galaxie in the past, but have always had a title. BIG QUESTION, If I do a Fiberglass/steel/homebuilt body on a homebuilt frame, how can I get it regestered? I know the proper way is to get an assembled title, but those people don't understand our culture. LET ME SAY THIS, I wouldn't put a car on the road that wasn't safe, but how do I justify an open wheeled, no bumpers, channeled roadster that sits 5" off the pavement? Buy a Model A title and a repro body tag? What if I get pulled over or into an accident? I wouldn't carry collision for a homebuilt but what about someone sueing me? Thanks for ANY insight, Paul
As of Jan 2012 legal way in Michigan http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1585-25476--,00.html Used to be a very simple way that I used for over 25 years. Has to do with Michigan purging its system of un registered vehicles every 5-7 years and was super simple and legal.. But, they changed the rules..
There is a section on the SOS site for this type of registration. Once you register it... Insure it to protect yourself from yourself and others like you would any car. If you are a veteran.... I would suggest nothing but usaa. The rest blow in comparison.
".... how can I get it regestered? I know the proper way is to get an assembled title, but those people don't understand our culture." huh? If you know the proper way, what's the problem?
" Buy a Model A title and a repro body tag?" That's why we aren't supposed to start threads about titles. Call or go by your DMV. Go to a show and ask someone.
It's not that hard or expensive to add cycle fenders and bumpers for the inspection. It's how I did it in Iowa and they "fell" off shortly after. I didn't think anything else on their requirements was out of line. Blue
There is no fender law in Michigan. Actually the car has to be basic and safe. 4 wheel brakes, resonable exhaust, lighting. Hand parking brake. It's been years, but the last "assembled" title I did for a "T" bucket wasn't too bad. The inspecter wanted w-washers (on a single hand op wiper!). Also indicator lights on dash for t-signals. But I had to show him there was no fender law. Luckily I was married to a state cop at the time and she knew the statutes. I think it also depends on which "inspector" you get.
I have bought registrations from a guy in NewYork that advertises in StreetRodder mag . I bought 2 early Harley regs. and also for a 48 Anglia . Went to secratary of state and applied for a title no problem .
