I was recently blessed with a 49 mercury that is mid 2 door conversion. Someone extended the front door on the driver's side then welded it with a battery and a coat hanger by the looks of it  but I think my best option is to seek out a set of coupe doors and go from there, anybody have a set and how much are they going for? Thanks in advance. J

I guess i'm just looking for some input to make sure i'm on the right track. i'm sure this has been covered but I just haven't run across a thread yet,any help/ suggestions would be a help thanks

  4. It's been done to several different models of fourdoors documented here using coupe doors, try the search function.

  5. I built my merc using the rear existing doors. I just extended them to stock length and made a new door jam. i think it looks good and much cheeper to do because 2 door doors are very hard to find.

  6. I was looking through your threads but didn't see, did you document the process?

Thank you guys! I will do some research on the measurements on doors for the coupe and I think i'll stretch my metal working legs and see if I can't pull this off! I'll be sure to document the progress with pics so you guys can keep me moving on it, thanks again

  9. I did not have a thread for what I did but do have some photo's showing what I have done. I also made ups some cnc files that I used to make the door jams which I could also send to you so you could have them cut out. I will have to get the photo's off my home computer to show how I did it but it worked out nice and you can use a simple autolock bear claw latch and it is all designed into the files.

I sold a pair of coupe doors, the jamb sections of the rear quarters, and a front seat to another HAMBer for $1400, then he had them shipped to Sweden where he's located. They had some rust but he did a fine job fixing them.

Coupe doors can be hard to come by and typically won't be cheap, a parts car is often cheaper. I might know where you could acquire some doors if you're serious.

  11. here are some pics on how I extended my doors. I wanted to make a hardtop so I used 10 gauge material so here are some pics that may help you out.

  12. The easiest way to make it a two door is to use coupe doors. A lot of them did get done the way the previous owner was trying with good success but the easiest is to use coupe doors.

I would have to see the butch job before I made any decisions on the best approach, I would think that coupe doors would be as scarce as hens teth and would sell pretty high.

I think your best choice would also be to consider everything you want to do to the car as well...

Is it going to get a chop top, or will it stay stock height and just be a 2dr conversion? Will it retain the post or are you thinking of a coupe top?

With a solid plan in mind, you could figure out which doors would most beneficial.

  14. I have a friend here in Houston, his H.A.M.B. knickname is Skyrodder. He did this to a '54 chevy. Send him a P.M. he may have tome tips.

Great work Scott! the merc looks great I was out in the shop last night trying to figure out if I had all the parts to do it and I think I can pull it off, but coupe doors would be nice to reference though,I wonder about the window regs can i reuse the 4dr units? I won't be doing a ht but i will be chopping it and slanting the b pillars, I took pics of the mess too while i was at it for the before's I hope to get back out there this weekend and try to get it mocked up I figure if i screw it up i can go after the coupe doors but i think i've got the confidence to see it through now,, thanks to you guys!!

  17. Jwoods, the window regs should still work but you will have to either move the guide channel to the new door jam or build a new channel. the photo's i attached dont really show how I finished it off but give you an idea how to do it. getting some 2 door coupe doors would make the job much easier but I am a cheep scape and just decided to build my own. but once I get door panels on you wont be able to tell the difference. I also have more photo's on my profile if you want to look at them they may give you some Ideas.

  18. I've had a top, doors, and the front half of the quarters from a '51 Merc coupe in the classified here for something like 18 months, lots of nibbles, no sales. All the window trim pieces and everything. Doors aren't perfect (some rust issues in the bottoms) but they're not terrible either. First $800 gets the package.

I am planning to use the 4 door B pillar , it will still need a fair amount of work...gonna use the front of the driverside rear door to lengthen the pass door and vice versa...I have found one set of rusty coupe doors about 4 hrs away from me for $500 ...they werent that nice, typical rusty crap from around here.

  20. $800 sounds like a deal, especially with the window trim. Save youself a bunch of work.

That's dirt cheap. $800 and a weekend's road trip to go pick up these pieces will probably save 200+ hours of labor on a 2 door conversion. I'm 2/3 the way through one of these conversions right now (a '56 Chevy, turning out great) and I've done 2 Mopars, plus helped in at least two more. Having done it myself, I'd say this is your best path.

Yeah that's a good deal. If I screw these doors up I will be in touch for sure, especially since I have to remove all of the rivets they used in the roof to do the chop:cool: so that might just be the way to go, thanks rustynewyorker.
