56 truck

I've got a situation that is continuously causing some headaches so maybe someone can assist. I've got a 56 truck, with a Camaro front clip, (front steer). I've been told that's a 70 to 76 front end. Numbers on the upper control arms are: (driver) 78HL and the (passenger) is G22J8R. Rotors I have to use come from a 79 to 81 Camaro (due to the bearings that came out of the old rotors. Can anyone tell me the year or years of the front end for sure or can these rotors be used on the 70 to 76 front end that I presumably have?

On the 58 I'm working on for my buddy we just googled camaro frontends until we found the correct one that matched ours. It turned out to be a 81-2 I believe and we just bought rotors and calipers from Advance auto pretty cheap.

 

I always thought the rotors/bearings were the same from 70-81, all front end parts actually. I'd check my Haynes manual (better than nothing LOL ) if I was at home.

I thought the same but maybe I'm wrong about the year of the front end to begin with. What year then is the front steer for Camaros?? Maybe 70 to 76 isn't correct.

1970 -'81 are the same front steer suspension. My 45th edition of Hollanders says 1 rotor (a)for '70-'78, another (b) for '79-'82, but b also fits a.

I'm half way around the world from my books, but now that you mention it Charlie...I want to say the 79-81 rotors are thicker/wider due to the car being heavier. And therefore the thinner rotors would "fit" but not meat specs if interchanged.

 

That could be...the note in Hollander's didn't give any instructions.

 

The spindles are all the same, the rotors use different bearings (OD is different) get everything from the same year whatever you choose. If you have a bearing you can check the number and figure out what year it is and get corresponding rotors.

Hey thanks, that helps a lot. so the front end steer is the same for 70 to 81 but the rotors can be different in thickness due to the weight. I found out the bearings only fit a few years so I went to that as my determination for new rotors. They fit perfect. So brake hoses should be from 79 to 81, or is there a difference

question? if I were to want to go to 2" dropped spindles, should I ask for 79 to 81 or 70 to 79??

 

I just went through this with my stubbed 49 chevy. The spindle(knuckle) are the same from 70-79. The 79-81 are the same. The difference being the outer wheel bearing. I pulled my bearing then compared measurements listed on that auction site to determine which year range I had.

^^exactly^^ so order the spindle that corresponds with the bearings you have. I wasn't aware the spindles were different at all. I know 67-69 were but thought 70-81 were the same.
