I had a new door gl*** cut for my 38 chevy by a mobile gl*** guy, when I put it back in the regulator, it's all bound up in the channel and the power window will not roll it up. Upon further inspection, the new gl*** is 1/4" thickness and the old gl*** is 3/16" thickness. The gl*** guy says they don't make 3/16' gl*** anymore and I need to get new window channel to fit the thicker gl***... Is this true? Or is there still 3/16'" door gl*** available for a 38 chevy coupe?
Maybe ask this shop the same question: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1937-38-CHEVY-5-WINDOW-COUPE-CL***IC-AUTO-GL***-VINTAGE-/251182399174?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1938%7CMake%3AChevrolet&hash=item3a7ba33ec6&vxp=mtr
I couldn't tell you if it's true or not, but it seems like the gl*** guy should kinda take the hit for selling you gl*** that doesn't fit your application.
I agree, or at least let me know the difference when he was cutting the gl***. The guy seems kinda full of shyte, so that's why I came here to ask.
I have bought a lot of gl*** from this guy and been happy every time. The difference between 3/16 and 1/4 should be too small to matter. Keep running the gl*** up and down til it fits better
That's what I thought! But apparently, it's enough for a bind. Also, seems like he cut it slightly too big, it has no front to back wiggle room. Maybe he'll trim it for me.
I have encountered the same problem and all I hear is that they don't offer or stock the 3/16" gl*** anymore. I had all kinds of problems. HRP
laminated gl***? i saw a guy belt sanding the edge of a window for clearance. tempered? if not,why not? you cant sand tempered gl***,its too risky for shattering. most side gl*** is tempered, single layer. i had some gl*** done for a boat application last summer,18" square,3/16.including tempering was 45.00.it also needs a stamp showing its safety gl***. saying they dont make it anymore is B.S. he just doesent stock it. gl*** is a huge markup,i guess due to waste and breakage, when i was cutting gl*** it was usually tripled from cost. i want to replace all the gl*** in the studie,i may buy a sheet and cut it myself, then send it away for tempering. biggest thing is building a bench big enough to set the sheet on.
Just talked to Bob's Cl***ic Auto Gl***.... Helluva nice guy.. He says they do make original thickness gl*** and it's usually used for heavy equipment.. He said to call a local gl*** company and ask who does heavy equipment.. then call that person and they will probably cut a pattern. He said heavy equipment used the thinner laminate gl***. Great info, Next time I'll call them first! As far as my gl*** goes, I'm going to have the guy trim it a little, I think most of my binding issue is because it's to tight.. hopefully a trim will work and I can call it good.
id talk to chris blattie on this site..got gl*** from him for my 48 chevy sedan delivery...my original gl*** was a bit thicker..no problem with the istallation tho...
Why did the numskull put the 1/4" gl*** in knowing that it needed 3/16" gl***. Should have waited for you a change the channel. Rather than break something else.
I buy gl*** all the time in Dallas that is 3/16 tempered clear,, It is not laminate, single glaze tempered. He is wrong.
I,ve been in the gl*** business for 40 years, I can get 3/16" & 1/4 "lami. or tempered, from any wholesaler. However I think your binding is more of a size problem than a difference of 1/16" in thickness.
This guy knows his gl***. He's cut two of my cars gl*** and will be doing a third one soon. He has custom makes them tempered or laminated and has over a 100o factory templates. He also polishes all edges!!!
Where I am the thinner laminated gl*** (4.3mm) is special order and hard to find. 6.3mm is the standard. It is regular plate gl*** with a membrane between - hence the additional 0.3mm. My question is shouldn't you be going for toughened. Pretty much standard gl*** which is cut to size - 3,4,5,6 & 8mm plate gl*** is all available - then effectively heat treated to render it suitable for side gl***. I just had some done for the truck in my avatar (5mm) and it cost about 30% more than regular laminated cut at the corner jobber gl*** store. I provided a template in thin MDF. Took about a week. (apologies for all the metric, but I'm sure you'll figure it out)
