I know there was a post earlier, but I can't find it now... just wanted to check on all other southeast Hambers. I'm running my computer with my "traditional" '60's model generator right now...looks like it might be several days before we get power back. Other than a lot of limbs and a few small trees, no other damage.. I hope everyone else fared as well.

Have you heard from Leadsled down in Fairhope? I saw some pics today and it looks like my vacation house by the pier in Fairhope may be a mess!

  3. My sister's family was building a new home on the beach...all of the walls were up and they'd started on the roof. The walls are not up anymore.

That's OK though, it was covered by builder's insurance.

Here's the low point: They were living in an apt. and had ALL of their stuff in storage. No insurance on stored stuff. It's all wasted.

Sad for them, but they're alive and that's what counts.

O.K. in Gump Town. No worse than wind gusts and some blasts of rain. No damage, and no power loss.

    So, ya feel lucky, punk?

    Why yes, I do!

  5. Wondering about 'My31and37' or something like that. I think he's in Ocean Springs (right outside Biloxi) and my mom, sis, and niece are out there. I've been trying to reach them with no luck...

Both my wife and I grew up in Gulfport--her folks live about 3 blocks from the beach--last were heard they were on their way to a shelter--can't get in touch with anyone over there--we'll gonna try and drive over in the next day or so--if there's anyone we need to check on let me know

I just got done looking at aerial photos from New Orleans and all I can do is worry(even though it does no good) about my closest friends that are from New Orleans. I was there a week ago helping my buddy move from the Bywater back to LA and this is all so surreal. It doesn't help that phones are still down so I have no way of knowing if everyone is alright. There's a feeling of hopelessness knowing that I can't do anything to help, to take away the damage and that I can't be there to be with them in these times. I know I'm a wreck but thanks for listening to me vent. You guys are one big family.

We have not had power, water or phone since monday morning. We just got water and phone back this morning, maybe we will get power back today. We had 105mph winds when the west eyewall came over! We had high winds for 10 to 12 hours.

I don't think I will ever complain about the cold and snow up here again. What happened down there is just terrible. Sending our best wishes and prayers to all involved. Tom

My wife and I have been watching the devistation on TV and I can't imagine what it must be like to be there. One thing that seems to be normal and thats the lawbreakers and looters are going about their business and business is especially good right now.

I hope all of my HAMB brothers and sisters will pray for those that have been affected by this disaster and be ready to contribute to the cause when the call goes out. It's going to be weeks, months and in some cases years before all of this back to normal.

How about we all start a HAMB hurricane relief fund??

I am sure many HAMBers feel helpless, so maybe we should do something to help out.

I'll make the same offer to any HAMB member or friend/family of a HAMB member that I did to Rocket Scientist Chris on another thread.

Does anyone have any family or friends that are left homeless and jobless from this? I can offer a family a roof over their heads, clean, dry beds to sleep in, food in the fridge, schooling for the kids, clothes, toys and probley a couple of decent paying jobs for mom and dad, all here in Michigan. I've got a great network of family and friends that are standing by ready to help out a family in need.

I haven't been able to sleep very good lately thinking about what you folks down south are going thru. I don't have any extra money to send right now but I've been mulling over how else I could help and came up with offering my home to live in and everything that goes along with it. All they would have to do is get here.

My offer stands for anyone that you might personally know.

I've got an empty rental house in Springfield Mo. if someone needs residence.

My family in Denham Springs LA have phones and power as of right now, but Baton Rouge is going to be swamped with people shortly.

  23. Geez, what a mess, Just seen the latest on CNN. Some amazing stories too.
One old guy rode it out with his 2 dogs in his boat. Finished up half a mile inland between the remains of a few houses.
The whole region will never be the same for years to come.

I plan to give my donation to the Red cross.
I wish there was more i could do. I feel very helpless not actually physically doing anything to help.
    Very interesting story..
You never realize what it will take to get everyone back on their feet. Here's a realistic timeline..

I finally got in contact with my best friend in D'Iberville yesterday (basically Biloxi) and they are fine... her house has 3 ft of water standing in it but at least its still there... the houses at the end of the street are now just slabs, and the neighbors who lived there (and decided to stay) are gone. There are a couple of bodies in her front yard pinned up against her house. No one has come for them yet. She is 5 miles inland. Oddly enough tho, her mother's house which is 3 blocks from Hwy 90 on the beach, is just fine with no water damage. Beauvoir, which is the beautiful old antebellum home of Jefferson Davis, is gone. I wonder about all those beautiful old historic homes on C**** St in New Orleans... but my favorite bar in New Orleans is still there... The Blacksmith's Shop... the oldest building in the city... built in 1604 I believe... Its good for the morale of the locals I think when they see that some of their landmarks are still there... little consolation I think, but still... any is welcome I imagine.

I work for a large produce company, and have orchestrated a donation of alot of our goods and produce that we will be shipping most likely to the Astrodome to help feed the familys.

Does anyone else know of shelters that have power and refridgeration that have taken folks in? Please PM me info if so.

Here in Ft. Walton (Fla. panhandle) we only go 60 MPH winds. Besides what's on the national TV, there lots of stuff from the Mobile Al. TV stations. God what a mess. As hot as it is there is a real threat of epidemics breaking out on top of all the rest.

  28. Can any one tell me how hard Amite La. was hit?I have a friend Johnny Dees that lives there and tried to call him- but made no connection yet...THANKS.
Very serious deal down -there it could degenerate even further if it doesnt improve real soon.

The scale of this disaster is still to be understood, I think even though the authorities were warning that they could have done more to get people out, having taken the train in and out of the city I was surprised there didn't seem to be any reports of special trains or busses to get folks out, seemed from the news we got it was if you had a car you were getting out otherwise the folks who didn't were left to it, its a terrable shame for New Orleans and her people she was a unique city.
One of the amazing things seems to be, no matter where you are in the world this big of a disaster overwhelms the rescue services etc, its great to see the people of the HAMB offering help and accomadation, some of us are a little far away for that........ I will check if anyone locally is collecting otherwise I'm sure I can do something via Year One in the other post.
