who works at a wrecking yard

I am trying to figure out what a fair price to pay for a Chevy LS series motor (5.3 or 6.0) out of a truck or suburban. the prices locally here in Seattle seems high for motors with 70k - 100k miles. I realize the lower the mileage the more it cost but I am looking for average prices in other areas of the country. I figured it might be cheaper to have one shipped in than it is to buy locally.

I want to use one of these motors in my next project as you can not beat the power potential nor the mileage you can get and the hood will never come open so what you can not see will not hurt you.

I have a 5.7out of a WS6 with the harness and all accessories I'm asking $3000. That is about avg for a LS around here. You can get the 5.3 much cheaper

 

5.3's from PU trucks go for 500-1000 bucks retail around here depending on mileage ...Truck 6.0's are more,all aluminum car LS engines a lot more.

All from the same vehicle

Harness with fuse box
Computer.
TAC module
Gas pedal
Radiator
All engine accessories
Shorty headers
factory crossover pipe with convertors
Fuel sending unit

And a box full of junk

I did have to wait on it though,
Told the guy what I wanted and he said next one would get taken apart as I asked if I left a deposit.

You can't beat the 5.3 swap.
My daily driver has 110,000 on it and it runs as good as it did with 10,000
The swap has another 40 k on it so that's 80k and still runs perfect.

 

Look around you can find 5.3's for less then $800 plenty of power and plenty of upgrade options.

 

You might give East Side Auto Wrecking in Bremerton a call. Word on the street is they are folding after the first of the year and everything's getting scrapped. They may have something and be willing to deal.

 

When I see them around here, they are in the $1000 range.

In my area of the Carolinas ... a 6.0 core block is around 600 dollars ... if you can find one. Almost no hobbyist has them as of yet ... due to them not being made in high numbers and them being usually late model stuff.

I recently SOLD ( at the Scott's salvage yard ) a late model Silverado 5.3 --- engine, transmission, computer, wiring and the drive by wire gas pedal for a little over 3 grand ... It was for a nice 32 Ford sedan.
It is in the 32 now and runs nice. Great mileage and good performance.
It was a 20 thousand something mile engine/transmission combination.We have 3 or 4 decent, good running 350 Chevrolet engines ... with the old style oil pan seal for around 600/700 dollars.

I myself, would go with the older style 350 ... because of no computer and a regular gas pedal. I do not like the drive by wire type in a old rod. PLUS the newer engines do not look as good to me with all the sensors, wiring and stuff.

BUT ... they are coming ...
and more and more folks will learn to adapt them and use them.

Most of the prices I have seen listed in this thread are quite low ... and most likely could not be found in my area for that type of money.

But like anything ... price is determined by SUPPLY and DEMAND.
In a good bit of the USA ... a 4 or 5 year old vehicle is rusted out ... and driveline parts are more plentiful there. Here ... driveline parts wear out before rust is a issue.

I work at a late model yard, and the prices are around 600-800 for a 5.3 with 100-150K on them, 900-1200 for a 6.0 with about the same miles(engine only, no acc's). The ones with close to, or over 200K we have to core out because no one will buy them. Maybe look at 4.8s? We cant give them away. In our area its nearly impossible to find a 2wd truck with enough options to have a 5.3 or 6.0 and not have 300K on it, so complete set ups are few and far between.

 

I wouldn’t worry all that much about mileage. The one in my 99 Silverado has just under 200 k on it and runs perfect …… and I clip my toenails daily w the intake valves.

 

Thanks everyone for your input. maybe the prices here are not to far out of line. 5.3 without the accy are going for a grand or more and 6.0 for 1500 to 2000. (these are all 100k miles or more. I prefer a cast iron block as they seem to handle boost alot better. (mine will be getting a turbo or two.)

Flamedabone, it will take 500 plus inches of pontiac with a huffer to hang with a 6.0L and single turbo motor on the dyno LOL.

That sounds like a great deal for a 20k drive line.

Some guys want the entire drop out and that seems to contain more value buying it that way.
Some guys just want a block and will run a carb and distributor and custom accessories and then wind up with 10 grand in it before it putters
