Hey I see our local pick n pull has a 66 Skylark on the lot. That would be an A body so not a full size. Think it might have the 12" aluminum drums? Its listed is a Special - Skylark rather than the just a Skylark. Thanks!
I was hoping to pre-qualify the trip out there...as in being kinda lazy when its 35 out. I'm thinking they may be 11" finned aluminum...I've seen some stuff on the net referring to the Special Skylark as having 64 fins but no diameter is mentioned.
I could be wrong on this, but I think only the full size Buicks had the 12 inch aluminum drums. Hopefully, someone will know for sure though. Don
The Skylark is on the "Chevelle" platform, those never had 12" brakes. I have never seen one with any type of alloy drum and in 26 years in the parts & machine shop biz never sold or turned anything but iron for those cars.
Later Buick GS's had em. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...esand-backing-plates&highlight=aluminum+drums
GM did make aluminum REAR drums but they were not the 12" drums desired by the hotrodders for early Ford brakes. The replacement drums for these newer drums were cast iron. I found a pair of the original factory aluminum drums in a flea market and used them on my 10 bolt rear in my old Deuce P/U. No way near the big Buick drums for the early Ford 12" brakes but they are, in fact, finned aluminum.
Tommy those were used on '80s Mid sized GM weren't they? I pulled some aluminum drums off of a '86 Malibu wagon to put on an off topic Auto-crosser in the '90s. Neat little car not HAMB friendly but the smaller aluminum drums may be a nice adittion to the rear of someone's open wheel roadster with big Buick brakes on the front. kennkat is correct on the '66 as far as I am aware though. I don't recall ever seeing big brakes on a skylark or a special. A little off topic here but banokmichaei I wonder if you would consider hosting your pictures in a HAMB album? The picture host you are using is cookie heavy and because some of us are cookiephobes aside from doing a ton of clicking we don't see your pics. Not being mean to you I just a suggestion.
1965 and 1966 Pontiac GTO's and Buick Skylarks/GS had aluminum front drums as part of a very rare "metallic brakes" option. I don't know if Olds and Chevy offered them on their A body models. I believe they were 10-1/2 or 11 inch but don't remember. If I get some time today I'll take a measurement because I have a set.
It's gone now, the Mods pulled it. It was one of those ones where they steal a line from someone else's post and have a bunch of red X's for you to click on. Don
I can verify that the 65 GTO had aluminum drums in front in some cases, I had one. But that doesn't help you looking at a Skylark. Unless there is a GTO right next to it.
