So I bought this ornament for my 1953 pontiac chieftain on ebay. The guys listing stated triple plated re-chroming and had the feathers of the ornament sitting next to the body to show the chrome work. It arrives in the mail today, and the chrome job is so thick, that I cant insert the feathers into their slots in the body of the ornament. Can you sand them down, or will that destroy the chrome/ lead to further problems in the chrome? Should I just send them back and open up a case with ebay? Help guys! Picture shows feathers not dropping into slot correctly. [IMG]

It needs to be sent back. the plater needs to carefully trim the excess copper plating from both mating surfaces, then replate if any show areas are damaged. It shouldn't be a big deal to fix, just tedious. Usually small pneumatic tools and/or dremel with various tips is what is used.

If the seller is 1chrome, that's my dad's shop, and I can get it fixed for you without a doubt. My uncle has a plating shop selling on ebay too, but I cannot remember his ID.

I don't know any platers out of Springfield Ohio, sorry. I know it's not any consolation to you, but I'm relieved to know that at least it wasn't anyone I know.

If the seller won't make it right and you are stuck with it, you still may be able to use it by trimming the excess plating very carefully (a dremel with various engraving bits and course sandpaper cylinder thing) where it is blocking the insert's fitment. All of the exposed copper left after trimming (assuming no slip-ups) will be covered by the insert and will not harm the overall integrity of the show surface. This is also assuming all the layers of plating are properly adhered to eachother, which they probably are.

    Good luck!

It's not done correctly ! DON'T try to do anything to it or they will say you screwed it up . Just send it back and make them fix the problem , not you . You paid them a lot of money to get the correct part to work and fit properly .

If you need good parts , a good place I have found parts is in the Hemmings that comes out every month . You can also put an ad in the "Wanted" section too help you find some good parts .
I wish you the best with returning the part and Good luck .
