I'm installing a T5 behind a B banger in my '31 model A and I've come to a point where I'm in need of suggestions. I have found plenty of info regarding the conversion, and I'm using a Dwight Bond adapter behind an AA bellhousing. I've got the factory A pedals hung off the adapter with the bar Dwight provides. My problem is that I can't figure out a perfect way to mount the master cylinder for the brakes. Anyone have some pictures of how they mounted their master cylinder? Thanks in advance.
I plan on relocating the battery.....sorry, I didn't mention that.....so I've got plenty of room to work with.
gashog posted a very good design that I used......with the same setup you have...plus kept the original battery location...only one hole to drill
I checked out gashog's design and that was my initial idea but I was a little concerned about relocating the arm on the original brake pedal to the bottom so it would push the brake rod instead of pull. Is it "safe" to weld on old cast like that? I ***ume that you (and gashog) cut an access door in the floor under the seat so you can get to the master cylinder to check/fill it? If you have a picture of your setup I'd love to see it. Thanks for the reply.
sweet! then it probably won't be a big deal.....hopefully. Thanks. Any pictures would still be great though....
Go to this months banger meet.....scroll down to Model a master cyl ideas....page down and you will found how I did mine
Keen on seeing this, that is what you come up with! I too have a built A banger, the AA bellhousing, and the T5. And all too fit in my '29 rails. But, just haven't got as far along as you. The Dwight Bond adapter you speak of... how you get and who/where? Well... I am probably gonna over question you, so where is this information to be found? threads here? let me know what ya can here or in a PM thanks S2
Okay I am starting to get it, at least some of it. Found the Dwight Bond threads and his address, so I gotta give him a call and see if they are still currently being produced. Found nothing on e*ay. Read through some of the CRAZYDADDYO threads and the 4WD box looks like another way to go, but I have the S-10 trans(elec. spedo style) already in hand. Do like torque tube over driveshaft though. Still, would very much like to see your master cylinder arrangment. thanks
On my build I used the Bond adapter....and above M/C mount....I also used a CDO adapter for the 4x4 S 10....to my Vintage Halibrand QC....i'm almost finished...BTW do not worry about the speedo if you use CDO's adapter as you will be using the orginal speedo that is located in the torque tube
Thanks brokenspoke Have made a slight attempt at searching for the 4WD S10/S15 trans. I think this IS the way to go. What year of Blazer did yours come from? Do you know if this is true, that, the gear cluster from the S10 trans I have will drop into the 4WD trans? Then, maybe, I am not looking for such good gears but just a good case. And I would be very glad to retain my torque tube and stock speedo(as I have #17, #18 gears in the cupboard). What ratio did you go with in your quick change? I have 3.54 3.78 4.11 crown and pinions on the shelf and(for the time being) 600's on 16" rims. What do you think works best with the 4WD low gears? Great that you are getting yours together! I have a ways to go and am still sleuthing out the parts. My banger is on the engine stand and running real nice though and this gets me and my tarped roadster through these snowy days. Thanks again for your thoughts and insight, S2
And sorry adavis... to have seemingly high-jacked this thread of yours. Looking forward to seeing your master cylinder install.
You aren't hi-jackin' my thread......just getting more people involved and that usually leads to more/better ideas. I've gone back and forth on the two basic ideas I've come down to and have finally decided on one. I'm ordering the new master cylinder tomorrow because my plain-jane dual MC won't work where I'm mounting it. I'll definitely take pictures and explain my setup when its done.
Sorry, I thought I'd updated this thread long ago with pictures. Unfortunately I am terrible at stopping to take pictures, so these are all I have at the present. I wish I would have taken better ones with the body off the ch***is....it would likely make a lot more sense to look at. I figured out a simple way to accomplish the task and it actually works really well. I've got about 4500 miles on the car without a single issue with the brakes. I ended up mounting the Wilwood dual master cylinder on the backside of the stock center cross member. I fabricated a rocker arm that coverts the pulling action of the stock model A pedal rod to a pushing action required by the master cylinder plunger. It places the master cylinder under the stock seat, hiding it from view but still allowing easy access. I bent a piece of 3/8" plate to use as a transmission mount and wishbone/torque fork mount as well as adds strength to the stock cross member. It bolts to the bottom of the cross member and is what is seen in the pictures with the large holes. This also more than makes up for the small section of the stock cross member I had to remove for the T5 shift tower. Oh, and with this setup I didn't have to do a single thing to the battery location...even used the factory battery box with no clearance issues. I'm completely happy with the result. It is simple and functions perfectly. The brakes are solid and have given me no problems. The T5 was the best decision I could have made on this car. I drive it daily and it is easy, fun, and economical. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
