1949 Plymouth Convertible- would you buy it?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Dec 2, 2012.

  1. Ok, Ok, so I guess this is a "whats it worth" thread. Delete it if you want, but I have looked online and can't come up with anything. So...I am not going to ask what it's worth, but rather- what would you pay for it??

Found this lil gem today. I am not in the market for one, but anything that is original and the top goes down I'm interested in :D I have honestly always liked these ugly lil cars...This one is very original. Super strait, very minimal rust. I think the light blue paint would clean up pretty well. The interior is surprisingly nice. He has everything that is missing from the car, he pulled the engine because it was stuck. Needs a top. Comes with a parts car and has a clean title.

I would think a speedboat stance, spots, whitewalls and skirts would make it a cool little cruiser. But would it be worth it?

If I was in the markent for another project I'ld dish out a grand or so. Should be easy enough to find used parts. I have tried to sell this body style 2-door astback for less than scrap price and no one bit. I think they are cool. You could probablly buy a good used motor for peanuts ... LOng story short if I could be driving it for 5k or less ( including wheels tires , int, motor, brakes ect. I would probablly do it.

    But I'm Cheap ..

  3. It would be a labor of love. Not a lot of market value. Cool car though. I would go a $1,000 if it didn't need floors and had paperwork.

Well, I sold one of these little puppies earlier this year. Had the car in storage for about 10 years and decided I had too many unfinished projects.

My car was very, very similar to this one in overall condition. Mine needed floor work and I did have a clean title in my name. I advertised it on e-Bay and it ran through two attempts. When the smoke all cleared I got $3850 for it but I did deliver it several hundred miles away for that. Netted out about $3450.

    Hope this helps you decide.

It doesn't have a hand giving the finger painted on the gas filler or next to the gas cap does it? One of my "older" neighbor kids had a baby doll blue ragtop like that that was dropped right to the ground when I was 12 or 13 and lived on Olympus Beach on Bainbridge Island. That car had a great set of pipes too.

It would be a fun home for the 55 Desoto Hemi and three speed overdrive I have stashed in the shed but I'm project poor too.

I'd nail it, that I believe is a fairly rare car. I'll buy it if you don't. That is if you tell me where it's at. LOL. Lippy

tough call since not your dream car. it is rare but, restored resale value limited. parts cheap but, new chrome, drivetrain, etc and you will be maxed out quickly. so, seller a wheeler dealer that got it real cheap or has he owned it a long time?

  13. $$ values in a recent value guide...Take them with a grain of salt!!

    #5-$3360.00. #4-$5600.00, #3-$12,600.00, #2-$19,600.00, #1-$28,000.00

Lotta range to deal with.....but it could be a diamond in the rough? 15,240 built..I'd grab it!

It is a cool car, but I agree with others that say not to pay much for it. There is something about a late 40's convert tho'....

I've known those convertables to be scarce and fetch a good penny if clean! If its just missing the motor I would pay up to 3k for it. Sounds steep but its an uncommon convertable. I've only seen 1 in person in Los Angeles.

  18. There is a 49 Plymouth engine on here for sale....

Here are 2 cars I know of right now with asking $$ in the upper $20k range.

Pretty rare alright. When I was about 4 my folks bought one of these new, had it for a few years. I still have memories of summer evening drives in New England with the top down. In my car hobby years I've always kept half an eye out for a '49 Plymouth convert just out of curiosity. This is the first one I've seen in I can't remember how long.
Might be a candidate for a Slant Six. And if it has both bumpers, seems like you could almost get your money back just on those if you decided not to use them.

Buy it !! You will be surprised at the common parts that are available for the Chrysler family of cars. It will make a cool cruiser. Dare to be different.
    This is a 49 DeSoto

Lets put it this way, I've owned a 50 plymouth fastback and if I were going to do it again it would have to be the vert. do a baby or a desoto hemi or hell a hopped up stock 6 some mild custom touches and you've got one hell of a cruiser. The six gets damn good fuel mileage too, I was right at 27 on the highway with mine at 55mph

    Chris,

I passed on one merely due to my immediate finance situation about two years ago that was in a garage in milwaukee.

It was in similar condition, 95% solid - complete with a large pile of additional parts. Even a few sets of 49 ply bumpers. (I did not realize they were that desirable at the time.)

If I remember right, he was asking under $3000. I have kicked myself weekly since.

49 plymouth conv is a one year body style, and while a bit quircky, I think desireable. If you can swing it, I would pick it up.

  23. I would gladly pay $3,000.00 for it. Then spend $40K getting it to look like these two examples and sell it for $20k like they are asking.
My mom and dad had one of these little beauties back in the 50's. It was totaled in '55 by a drunk in a '50 Hudson . Mom was in the hospital for weeks and the drunk walked away .
But really, I think it is well worth $3,000.00 especially with another parts car with an engine.

  24. I have a 50 that I'm dying to start on they are rare - some sell for a lot but can you put a price on open air motoring on a front seat that as soft as a couch?
    Easy to work on
    Parts plenty
    Weird enough to be cool

Ya know, I think I would probably have to say go for it. Truth is, it IS an ugly little car, but with the brief description of what you are thinking about I think it would look great. That is in my opinion one of the very few cars that would work very well with the motorboat stance and skirts. I'd scare up a Chrysler 6 for it though with a couple of carbs and the head shaved. Oh, gotta have an overdrive too. All this would be dependant on how bad the floors are though...

If you can get it for "sub-$2500", I don't think you would get hurt, even if you tried to turn it without doing any work. Cool find Chris!

Unfortunately the Plymouths of the '30's/50's, especially the convertibles are grossly undervalued.. The Chrysler people refer to them as "The lowly Plymouth"..
As one of the contributors to this thread inferred, you can put $50k into the car and be hard pressed to get $20k out of it..
The Plymouths only had one big problem.. The engine.. underpowered and with a short life.. I believe the '49's did have the OD option which is a big plus.
Having restored three convertibles, 50+ years old, I can tell you from first hand experience, finding parts for them is very difficult, especially window and door parts..
At first glance the rust out will appear to be minimal.. As you get the car apart big problems will become apparent.
So! Whats the car worth? I would say anything over $2k would be a waste of money..
I passed on a '42 Plym conv., a very limited production car, with two sedan parts cars a couple of years ago. The owners late husband was going to restore the car, taking it completely apart..I offered $2,500. She would not take less than $15k for the car (s).. I passed..
An old story... "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"..

I'd be all over it, if I could afford it and needed another project. Years ago I took a bone stock '49 Dodge four door in a trade. I ended up hacking the roof off/chopping the windshield and drove the piss out of it. One of the few I regret selling.

  30. Thanks for the input guys...may not be quite the find that I thought. He has the engine, it is stuck. It also comes with a complete parts car (2 door sedan). He wants 4K for all of it...if it was a ford it would be worth 4-5 times his asking price. But I kinnda assumed it would be a pretty low dollar car.
