I bought a 60 year old project vehicle from a guy in New York state.
Got a notarized bill of sale and he gave me the paperwork when he bought it 40 years ago. (Notarized certificate of sale in his name).
He never registered it because of a blown engine and just stored it for the next 40 years.
NJ will not accept the bill of sale to me or recoginize the old certificate of sale that shows he is the owner.
They say he has to get insurance and register it in NY then it can be transfered.
Well the old timer does not want to be bothered with all of that.
So now I am stuck:confused: Any advise?

Try looking up the NY dmv site for info. I'd see if they have temp registration available for out of state buyers, just to get a car home to their state? Some states do.

Anyways, if they do offer that, drive up to NY and get the temps in your name. Then there will now be current registration on that car.

I guess they are concerned about a potentially stolen vehicle? If that's their concern, can't you just get the local police to run the numbers and issue an affidavit stating it's clean?

Man, this crap needs to be federally standardized. Or, people need to follow procedures when transfering a car. It's amazing the number of people who buy a vehicle and wait forever to transfer the damn title. That's always the first thing I do. Usually on the way home from the sale.

New York is a non title state for somthing that old. Registration only. I got a notarized bill of sale when it was picked up along with the owners notarized certificate of sale when he purchased it 40 years ago.
Now it sat for 40 years without a registration because it did not run (barn find)
I was under the assumption that with a current notarized bill of sale and his notarized certificate of sale from 40 years ago was OK. Well apparently not in NJ.
Pat, thanks for your response. What are the steps to do a tirle search in NJ.
I have asked NJDMV and they will not help. They want a current registration from New York.

    NO thanks!

Yup, amazes me the guys that come on here and ask "what should I do?" after they've gotten in a bind.

I rarely buy anything without a title, and only then when I've checked in with my local DMV to make sure the paperwork I'm getting is sufficient to get a title.

    Do your homework people!

I was told by a DMV rep that the notarized bill of sale were sufficent. Well they are not. So I have turned to the Hamb for advise as I have in the past for other problems.

Here in Michigan,if we get a veh from a non title state you have to get the veh bonded. It's done thru your local Ins agent. With the bond they ck vin to make sure it 's not stolen or no interest against it.You then take bond to the dmv and they issue a title. You might check to see if NJ does this.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread but. I am in PA which like NJ is a nearly impossible to get a title for a no title vehicle. My thoughts are that states should make it easier to do. They should just make it profitable for them to do. Something simple like you sign a form that makes you liable for any legal problems coming from the transaction ( in PA that is already in the title tranfer laws) and charge a huge amount to issue this type of title say .... $500 win-win for everybody. There would be guys lining up to title any piece of junk they found.

We got a title for the 56 caddy (the pic) the car was here in NJ. We had to first register and insure it in NY. And then transfer the title to NJ. Be sure to not cancel the insurance until the title is transfered or all hell will break loose. We were fined $500.00 for no insurance! We used a title company in NY that we found in Hemmings, did everything by mail or fax.

Be prepared for long waits and stupid fees charged.

Tell the old timer you want your money back because he sold you a stolen vehicle and you are going to call the police.

Maybe then he can be bothered helping you fix HIS problem.

i would go to another dmv and try. last week i went to the one close to my house to reg a 63 galaxie that hadnt been reg in 10 yrs because the p.o. passed away. the car floated from person to person and never got registered. i went in with a pile of paperwork that they gave me before and a vin inspection, the guy told me that i had to do another pile of paperwork. i got in my truck and drove a hour to the dmv that i used to go to, i get their and the lady to me that i had to send a registered letter to the p.o. and come back, but she gave me a # so they can start the process in the system. when i got called up the guy at this dmv started putting stuff in the pc and next thing i know he says "that will be $456.00". i pulled out some cash and he gave me tags.

needles to say, i went in about 4 times to do this car , and every time i left with different paper work

  14. Going to another DMV here in NJ will not do anything. After 911, NJ became the worst state to do anything with a vehicle unless you have a TITLE or legal transferrable registration from a state that does not issue titles and then sometimes they won't accept those either. DO NOT try to use any known title services to obtain paperwork - you will land in a heap of trouble doing that and really open a can of worms where they will pry into everything you own. You may be able to have a relative or friend from another state possibly help but in most cases the vehicle must have the vin verified in person. NJ is the worst state to do anything without a proper title.

Try another DMV - nothing to loose. Bought a '56 Olds from NY - no title state back then but had a copy of prior registration from NY. They said the registration acted like a title with a no title car in NY. Also got a notarized bill of sale from the owner. My local DMV wouldn't accept and wanted me to jump through hoops. Drove 30 minutes to another DMV and had it done in and out the door in 20 minutes. New title.

Might not work, but worth a try.

  16. It's my understanding that you can get a non resident title from the Maine DMV

  17. Another thing here in NJ. If you have a title in your name and never register it as its a project you are working on - do NOT lose the title. DMV will NOT issue a replacement even though they will look it up and see its still open in your name. You must produce an old registration or insurance card in your name only in order to get a replacement. It boggles the mind how stupid this sounds but I've gone thru this personally and have a couple friends who have as well. Is it on record as mine - yes. Can I get my lost title replaced - no!

Check out WWW.benboyle.com. tells you how u can register your car in the state of Vermont. Vermont uses registration as a title for vehicles over 15 years old. You also do not have to be a resident to register your car there. I registered a car I towed away for free this way with no problems.

  19. Perhaps in Ca you can. Had a friend with a motorcycle with one of those and the feds came out of the back room and said it never was from Maine. They were relentless calling him all the time wanting to check every vehicle he had. He finally had to sell it to get them to stop hounding him. Not a good idea.
