Need ASAP 11/16-24 left hand tap - Where?..

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daddy_o's_diner, Dec 3, 2012.

  1. Like the ***le says, need an 11/16-24 left hand tap ASAP. I can't find anyone that carries one. McMaster, MCS, no-one. I have spent an hour googling and calling around. Does anyone have one or a source for one?

  8. That's what I was just told also Don. Jo Kerr swears it's 24 that we need.

Meengrinch has one and is sending out to us tomorrow. How awesome is that?!?

We are using early ford tie rods and the bungs that Taulbert sells.

Try a phone call to Kromhard Twist Drill Co, 1097 Sweitzer Ave. Akron Ohio 330-535-7129. They have a vast supply of unusual taps & dies. I last dealt with them two years ago-***ume they are still in business.

I have a 11/16-18 Right tap in my tool box that I have had for 40 years,... During this time I have owned 5 or 6, 11/16-18 left hand taps,... They are the ones everybody wants to borrow,.... and nobody ever returns..... I'm in the process of ordering a new one myself.....

Even if it's not in McMaster-Carr's catelog if you tell them what you need they will drop ship it and bill you on your regular account. I've done it several times with special stuff. They will find the item, give you a quote and you have the choice to order it or not.

Search fleabay for "11/16-24 tap". There several RH and yes even a LH listed there. Stuff seems to show up there that can't be found elsewhere.

Early Ford tie rods are 11/16-18, not -24, FWIW.

  19. Read 'em and weep.

    I'm wishing it was 18. Definatly 24.

Still no tap found. The one I was going to borrow was an 18.

I'm still sh*t out of luck and need a tap......

Are you putting treads in something or cleaning up threads. If you have a machine shop near or know someone with a lathe you can probably get it done for the price of a speacial thread tap.

I guess they do exist, just never saw one or needed one. Just out of curiousity, what is that part you are trying to tap threads for ?

Dave - I sent Jo a message on facebook about this too. There are very limited tap and dies out there for this ******* 11/16-24 thread.

Just to make sure - do you guys need a tap for internal threads, or a die for external threads? If by chance you're trying to make a draglink or tie rod (which I have a feeling is not the case), I start with a stock tie rod bar, shorten the RH threaded side and then rethread that side on a lathe.

I have a 11/16-24 RH thread die (external thread), but I never got it to cut concentrically on the round stock I was trying to thread. I even chucked the die up in the tailstock of a lathe, and attempted to turn the spindle by hand - and it did not cut perfectly concentric. The only successful method I've found for cutting this ******* thread externally (as seen on my bungs), is with a lathe.

Now, if you guys are trying to thread something internally, to say screw onto my bung, I'm not real sure where do get a tap.

  26. Thanks for the response Cory, I was just looking up your info to contact you when I saw you posted.

I'm not totally sure what Jo needs to do, he just texted me to get him a tap asap so he could keep working. Said he needed to clean up some threads and needed the tap. I thought I'd make one phone call and get one on it's way. Instead I have spend hours and found nothing.

Thanks to everyone else for trying to help. I'll get with Jo in the morning and discuss our options.

    **** EDIT ****
One popped up on Ebay today. Thanks to All for your suggestions.
