Hey there, Ive heard that a two carb set up on a flathead intake is best if the intake is the one with the spaced apart carbs, super dual maybe.... Ive heard the closer together two carb set up is not as good performance wise. My question is would it hurt a flathead ford to run a 3x2 intake and run a "dummy" blocked off carb in the middle and only the two functional carbs on the ends? Dont get started on the "if its fake it aint traditional" ****. Thanks for any and all educational and informative responses.
I never could get two carbs to run right. Do a ti power with the outer carbs as dummies. It will run like a top.. There will be guys tell you run them all blah blah blah.. It's to temper mental to fuss with in my opinion. If you do the math two carbs will be to much cfm anyway. Plus your probably not running 110 octane fuel..
Hot Rod magazine did a flathead intake manifold test this month comparing single 4bbl, 2x2 and 3x2 setups. It doesn't directly address the question you are asking but it has some informative information in it.
I don't mess with multiple 2bbls...I like driving my cars. I run closed hood and use a Holley 390 4bbl. No fuss.....just go! Traditional....maybe not....functional, you bet!
I run the regular dual with the top mount generator...works perfectly. If you have an offset generator or ugh alternator, then who cares run whatever unless you plan on dyno-ing it to have a perfect build sheet and all that kakapoo!
What Slick Willy said !!!!!! A pair of 97's, with a "regular dual" manifold and away we went. Best thing to set 'em up is a Unisyn tool....I wouldn't be without mine . Happy Roddin' 4TTRUK
I'm running twin English 97's on an Meyer 's heated intake, runs great. empi makes a nice synch tool. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Running a three carb manifold the end ones are for looks, the whole thing looks neat etc, but is easy to tune and runs good, just hook up the linkeage so all the carbs look like they work use a merc cam and Reds header and it look god and goes as well! Laurie
Tall eddie meyer, two 97's, not progressive linkage, gen on top, runs great. You gotta sync them a few times, (get the unisync tool) then listen to them roar when you put you foot in it. I tried progressive linkage, flat pedal compared to two 97's at every tap of your foot. Screw the gas mileage, we're talking serious fun here. Happy motoring!
I too could never get my flatty to run good on 2 carbs with my Edlebrock 2 carb intake so I put a stock intake on with an old school sling shot and as you can see from the fuel line, the one toward the body is blocked off.. She is happy again!! lol
2 94's with one power valve, but stagger the linkage slightly, (open one slightly earlier than the other) makes it much easier to drive! Gets great mileage too, 276" with t-5 and 3.80 gears and 30" tires.
I've got 2 flattie here running 2 carbs, one is 94's on an offy regular dual (generator room) and the other has a pair of 97's on a Offy super duel. Both set up with both carbs hooked together and they both work well. I went with 3 94's on the last motor I built in my recently sold 40 (the one in my avitar) with progressive linkage and loved it! I found it easier to tune with the three since the outboard ones had no idle circuts or powervalves. Just set the center idle screws and make it run good then play with the linkage to get the outside ones to open at the right time to work with the cam. Personally I'd never set one up with dummy carbs unless I was just looking for looks on a stock motor but that's not me, I've never had a stock flathead! As far as the op questain, if I was running a 3 carb manifold I'd make them all work, I think it would be easier to tune if the motor is hot rodded or just the center one if the motor is stock spec.
I run 2 dueces with the wide spaced fenton manifold, block is bored and stroked with mild street cam, a/c and a c-4. Drive the car everywhere city and hiway and have no problems, except of co**** it ****s gas.................
Acorriding to the Hot rod magazine article, two 97's outperformed the single 4 barrel set up regardlis of manifacture. The Navarro three carb manifold worked the best. Barney utilized the Ford 180 design to maximize flow. The single best Two carb manifold was the Navarro racing Two carb but this manifold doesn't have a provision for carburetor heat which may or may not be a factor depending on where you live and how much ethanol is in your fuel.
