What is worth saving on a '32 commercial dump truck? Obviously, any sheetmetal that is not too bad is worth keeping. Any little bits, too. I know the frames and rear drivetrain are too big and heavy for 1/2 ton trucks or hot rods. How about the front suspension? Is that axle bigger than a p***enger car axle? How about the wishbone, spring, etc? Will anyone want a '32 4-cyl engine or ******?
The 4 cyl is valuable to many because it came equipped with a fuel pump unlike the Model A. All the sheet metal is the same and can be used for patch panels even if bent up pretty bad.
The 4 cly engine is a desirable item. The bellhousings are used with an adapter for the speed conversions in the p***enger cars. I think the brake pedal and clutch arms are the same as the p***enger cars.
I'd save whatever you can from the entire truck. The frame will still be valuable to someone. You can still make a neat hot rod frame out of them.. Zibo on here built this frame for his T roadster from an early Ford AA frame.
The model "A" truck front axle is huge compared to the cars, I think you can save the body, the engine and gearbox.
The frame is good for the rails and the springs can be reworked, if you were not so far away and were tossing the frame and suspension I would be all over that. Donot toss a thing if you are parting it out just offer it up. Someone will want it. As for the banger there is a large group of banger lovers on this site, one of them will want it for sure. There is a monthly banger meet here on the main board and it usually goes like a bazillion pages. Just check the links on this search: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=4652078
I have a lead on one locally. I am not sure what the owner wants in compensation. I think it's an antique shop and not a car person, and I got the impression they'd prefer to have it removed. If I could get it cheap, I'd consider having it towed here, where I could tear it down. If that works out, I'd offer up most things very cheap or free to HAMBers.
I do realize that in a perfect world, it would be nice to save the whole thing, and then have a working '32 dump truck! But I can't build 'em all.
Don't throw anything away. Even the vintage nuts and bolts have value if they aren't too corroded. (I clean, refurbish and use old Ford bolts whenever I can without compromising safety) Every piece of your truck can find a new home. The key is how much space you have to keep the extra pieces around
The K-member can also be used and is desirable. I used one from a BB truckframe in a model A (with a lot of welding) Still have the front crossmember (thicker than a p***engercar) and also kept the rails (approx. 5 meters long or 17 foot)
My dads full fendered 33 pickup is using a 33 truck frame its full fendered, easy to shorten the *** end of the commercial frames, no need to box the big rails and we are building it on the cheap. The lawn chair judges may not approve but then again you can guess my opinion of their opinion.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473875&showall=1
Step 1: Take pictures of the vehicle and post on HAMB. Step 2: Watch all the dudes on the HAMB get wood over it or certain parts. Step 3: Sell all the parts you don't want for scads of dough because "32" is a magical number. Step 4: Commercial truck gone.
When you get it home BEFORE you start tearing it apart put the whole thing up for sale here, on fordbarn.com and at earlyfordv8.org. If you sell it all together it would be easier for you and save an old truck at the same time. Although I am not one of them there are people that love the old trucks. Charlie Stephens
If its the one on craigslist its a real turd, he also has a water truck he says is a 34 but has a later cowl, fenders they both had a real rough life.
I didn't realize it was on Craiglist. I just found the ad. I am not willing to pay much to get it. I'd be willing to part it out if I can haul it out, mainly to get whatever is salvageable into the hands of anyone that needs it. Thanks for all the advice so far.
