A friend of mine has the video and if i remember right is was like a very limited edition for 'stripers' only then was sold to the public...I could be wrong bit its been atleast 6-7yrs since it was shown to me & i just cant remember all the details...I know some popped up here for sale...
I have a copy of that laying around here somewhere.....Roth also gives a step by step on an old Honda Civic......He also comes to NY to feature legendary striper and letterer Vic Kessler
I have that video tape somewhere, along with 3 others I got from Roth himself. He had a little xerox paged 'catalog' that you could send for (8 pages or so) that had his pinstriping 'how-to' booklets, videos, etc. in them. But, at the time, about '87 I think, he was living in La Mirada, CA. and I was his meter reader. I talked to him just about every month, and remember his little faded red Honda civic with lettering and pinstriing all over it, sitting in the driveway. I think he was working for Knott's berry farm around this time, which was just a few miles away. I love a part of the interview with Von Dutch, where Roth is saying to Von Dutch that "of course while he (V.D.) is striping he certainly wouldn't ever drink any alcohol" (Big Daddy was a Morman) and Von Dutch replying with something like: "oh, no of course not" with a totally straight face. He was probably holding a wine bottle behind his back, and Roth certainly knew Von Dutch drank like a fish. That part cracked me up. I'll have to dig it out, and watch it again. The production is kind of crude, but very Roth-like. There's a part in the video where roth is showing his tecniques like poking through the layer of paint he would allow to form over his cans of 1-shot, much like the skin on a cup of pudding, with a pop-sickle stick, to get some paint out of the can for striping. He never put the lids back on 'cause he said they didn't seal anyway,...probably not with all the paint on top of the cans. Or the roll of toilet paper he kept in the back of his hatch-back car to wipe the paint off his hands, while it stuck to his fingers and he got paint all over everything anyway. He was also his own camera operator. It's cl***ic Big Daddy Roth!
It's in the Galpin motor sports colleciton, I did a post on that collection about the Orbitron. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=241586 BB
I have the Honor of calling Von Franco a friend of mine...what I thought was the best about this video is NOW I know where where he got his "beat" from. These older guys have a way that they speak...it's a totally lost art. There's a rythm...if you can hear it, you know what I'm talking about.
Bringing this back up. Just saw these for the first time last night. I was blown away! 2 hours of Dutch talking, Oh man! 8 clips, here is the link to #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gtb6991Hxc
Man is Dutch short. I went to Church Ed and know he was not all that Tall. Duck looks like a kid in size to him. Very Cool
I just watched it all. There are so many quotes I can't keep track! What a character. That was great even if you're not into painting. Wow.
Watch Tales of the Rat Fink,on one of the little short subject films after the movie.on CD, Von Dutch is at some kind of rat fink reunion, drunk, drinking schlitz, letters something all the way across the front of the hood on a 66 chevy pickup,BACKWARDS,so you can read it in a mirror. Comes out perfect of co****
