This may be old news to HAMBers that care about this stuff, but it's brand new to me. CBGB's in NYC may be shut down in August. I doubt that Mayor Bloomberg will see fit to put this one on the national register of historic places. Anyway, write a letter or something. http://www.cbgb.com/save_cbgb.htm
yeah howard stern brought this up today,,they owe a ****load of back rent, looks like there ****ed.Havent been there in years but it was always wild.
Used to go there for years to see all the Sunday ******** Matinees. It will be sad to see that place go. I believe it really is a historic MUSIC landmark.
****in A man, hats where early'REAL'punk bands like The Misfits and Black Flag cut thier teeth at i wonder why they owe so much ,i figured that place was always buzzin with shows so i figured money was never a prob.
The neighborhood has changed and the new residents are not so keen on a punk club that also happens to have one of the last true "flop houses" above it.
used to go there between 77-82 "F'n" great.what a dump but thats what was cool and of course the great and not so great bands and characters hagin about.some no longer on this earth.last time I was there was in 83 (god im ****ing old).
I hope they get that figured out. I saw a buddy play there in '89. I think the band's name was "Time on Target". Malcom Forbes was there that nite. Wow. Memories.
Roger Miret said something about "saving CBGBs" when AF played here a few weeks back. I guess it's just the way it is, property values go up, dives close down. There's zero respect for history in this country.
i agree with you on that Nads. there is a comedian named Eddie Izzard who is British and he pokes fun at the US for destroying all it's history for parking lots and **** like that while Europe still has standing castles. it's so true. i've never been to CBGB's but i know that it's a landmark in NY and the country for that matter. hopefully someone in the music business can buy it or whatever. i'd hate to see it turn into a Starbucks or something.
even some ***holes like axle rose, meaning guns 'n' roses, cut their teeth there. i've seen tons of **** that most people will never see right at that very spot. that place is STILL buzzin' every fuggin' weekend. this is a god damn shame. tred.
In the spirit of the Ramones and The Dead Boys, Who Cares! lets go sniff some glue! CBGB's lived fast, will die young, and leave a ratty looking corpse.
Visit the linked website at the top of the page, it explains the situation pretty well. Unless you've got a few grand stashed away somewhere, you're probably not going to do much good. If you really want to help, write a letter to NYC's Mayor telling him that you disagree with closing down CBGB's. The matter is not simply a case of overdue rent for CBGB's. Although that's a big part of the problem (approx. $100,000), the real issue is that the building managers are subsidized by the city to provide homeless shelter. They get a good chunk of cash monthly from the city based upon how many homeless people they can safely squeeze into their buildings. The sq. footage that CBGB's now occupies is worth more to the landlords as a subsidized homeless shelter than it is as a historical landmark. Even if CB's could pay off the overdue rent, the new rent is going to be double what they pay now & city inspectors have said that the building is not up to fire code. Anyway, their ****ed. Write a letter if it'll make you feel good, but I really doubt a money-****ering politician like Bloomberg is going to respond to ANYTHING other than LOTS of cash. -r
I wouldn't want to be the one to re-model the place! I saw my uncles band play their last gig there before they went their seperate ways.I felt the same way then as I do now about the p***ing of something great, something better is likely to come along.
Just like here in California when the closed the legenday Fenders...It ****s cause I always wanted to see a show at CBGB's
