Just saw it on Yahoo when I was checking my mail... That sucks! "Take five is one of my favorite tunes ever. Dave and Vince Guirraldie (Spelling?) made modern jazz listenable.

"Dave Brubeck's the swingingest" - Jack Kerouac.

I wish period Jazz was a bigger part of the traditional car culture movement.

Very sad news, I've loved his stuff since the 50s. Played a good bit of it, as well.
I hope it was a peaceful passing; he deserved that.
    R.I.P. Dave.
    Davo.

  9. My dad played a few gigs with Brubeck, now they can jam on the other side together. Godspeed Dave.

  11. I've only ever played Take 5 and Unsquare Dance, but he was one of the best. Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Petersen, Bill Evans, Benny Green, Chick Corea, Michel Camilo... so many great pianists.

I have never been much into jazz but "Take Five" is one of my favorite songs. The smooth rhythm is relaxing until you get to the drum solo which is something else. The sax is the lead instrument and the sax player wrote the song. Dave's piano was barely heard. He was one of the greatest musicians we have had.

  15. That album (Time Out) changed Jazz forever- will miss him!

One of Dave's brothers was head of the music deparment at Santa Barbara High School in Santa Barbara, California back in the 60's. Dave would do a concert there annually for the benefit of the school, and I was lucky enough to see him there once.

I'm going to break out my "Take Five" LP and put it on the turntable later today as a tribute to the man and his music.

    RIP Dave Brubeck.

Here is a youtube video from 1961 when Take Five was on the Top 40 Pop Chart. It is the only live video I found on youtube that features Joe Morello's drum solo which was one of the best parts of the song. Joe passed last year.

  24. I went to one of the most renowned jazz schools in the nation (The University of North Texas) and never quite warmed up to jazz, but dang, I can appreciate the talent represented there.

Brubeck played and guest lectured at UNT many times over the years.

What a super loss, he was one of the most hip cats to ever play music. I think I was in a bar in San Louis Obispo that he owned, little fuzzy on that one. R.I.P hipster, I have been playing his you-tube songs since I heard the bad news, every cut he did was so awesome. ~sololobo~

Dave Brubeck was a real standout. People who don't know anything about jazz still can appreciate Take Five. That was me three years ago, when I started to discover the world inside jazz for myself. Still finding my way, enjoying the experience, partly because of DB's great work.

  27. Rest in Peace, cool cat! Thanks for all you gave us. You will be missed.

That song, Take Five, was instrumental (pun intended) in attracting a whole generation of rock and rollers into the world of jazz and has become a standard - as many on here have already testified.

I haven't gone to many concerts in my lifetime but just after we got married I took my wife to a Dave Brubeck concert in Sacramento. This would've been in the spring of 1960. We still remember that night and talk about it from time to time.

Great man, great musician, great music. We've lost a legend. RIP Dave Brubeck.

  29. I write a lot of grind metal, black metal, ect.... He influenced me greatly. He was/is a national treasure.
