Dr Phil's 57 Chevy found at chop shop

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They found Dr Phils 57 Chevy along with 14 other cars at a chop shop here in the San Fernando Valley
They should hang these guys, like they hung horse thieves

A stolen vintage car owned by famed talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw has been recovered in the San Fernando Valley early Tuesday morning.
At 7:25 A.M., investigators recovered the 1957 Chevy Bel Air, detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
“Detectives assigned to the Taskforce for Regional Autotheft Prevention, commonly known as TRAP, have been targeting auto theft rings involved in the thefts of classic automobiles. Detectives were aware that suspects have been burglarizing vehicle repair shops and stealing classic vehicles throughout the Los Angeles County area,” said Detective Jess Corral.
“Since the theft of Dr. Phil’ McGraw’s classic 1957 Chevy Bel Air, detectives have been conducting covert operations and inspections of businesses throughout the County. Detectives have recovered and identified fourteen stolen classic vehicles where the identifying numbers had been switched to avoid being identified as stolen. Five additional classic vehicles are still in the process of being identified. Numerous suspects have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing,” Corral said.
Using various investigative techniques, TRAP detectives have identified one of the classic vehicles recovered as belonging to Dr. Phil McGraw. The 1957 Chevy Bel Air has minor body damage and is in good condition.
The Taskforce for Regional Autotheft Prevention (TRAP) was established in 1993 under the direction of the Countywide Criminal Justice Coordination Committee (CCJCC) with the Sheriff designated as the Regional Coordinator. The taskforce consists of regional investigative teams from various law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County. TRAP’s mission is to reduce the incidents of auto theft countywide by coordinating a deterrence, investigation, and prosecutorial program with all criminal justice agencies, and private sector business leaders.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Greg Jones at (626) 572-5620. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

My first thought was that someone fairly local had stolen it for the engine but the rest of the car should have shown up by now if that was the case. Local guy who had a broken engine and little or no money all the sudden has a strong running engine in his car? Not necessarily a rod but maybe a Chevelle or Camaro or some other car that the engine would drop right in?

Stolen by or for an unscrupulous shop owner to be blown apart and redone as "their build" with the distinctive parts replaced? Any word of a somewhat back alley shop doing a fresh build on a chopped deuce within a hundred miles?

It has to be somebody that knows him and has been to his shop and checked things out. I sure would like to see his little girl get this car back in time for Christmas..... I hope who ever did this doesn't get any sleep and if they do all they see in their dreams is his little girl standing next to the car. You will pay the "piper" for what you did one day.

bet it's within a 10 mile radius; I'd check with every self storage facility around. Its gotta be outta sight.

  20. There were some cars found by me like that. Put into a storage unit, stripped and it wasn't until the rent was way past due the cars were discovered.

I would have hoped pictures were shown all storage units within a decent radius. Then again if it was in a covered trailer, it could be anywhere.

I don't know the area where the car was stolen from, but have the police checked area ponds or lakes? Tulsa police recently recovered a stolen vehicle from a pond in a wooded area that had been stolen sixteen years earlier. This pond is in a busy business district in an undeveloped section. Two boys spotted the vehicle as the pond water level was lower because of two years of decreased rainfall. A man I knew went to local airport and hired a pilot to fly him around the area after his O/T car was stolen. The car was spotted in tree filled field and recovered less engine and trans and miscellaneous othe items. Don't give up hope.

Im hoping for the very best in this situation, I would love for the car to be found and returned Christmas morning. What a great ending to a terriable ordeal.

Truth be told, It maybe years before it is ever found, earlier this year a man in New York saw his car on ebay a 64 corvette if I remmember correctly, it had been stolen in 1965.

I have my fingers cross and hoping for a Christmas Miracle.
    Godspeed

  27. Good points here. My buddy had a Trans AM stolen years back.. brand new. Found in a local dumping ground for stolen cars. The cops found it during a routine cruise through the place.

I'm not familiar with that particular section of Florida, but if it is like most of the State, we have lakes and ponds all over. Thieves down here dispose of cars quite often by driving them into a lake, pond, or even a canal. Usually the cars get found when the water level starts to drop during dry season.

But the thieves went to extraordinary lengths to get this one and most likely know the value of all the parts on it, which makes me think it is simply being chopped up for parts. A couple of guys could have that car down to nuts and bolts in a day or two and have the parts stashed somewhere. The body would be the only truly identifiable component, and even that could be stripped of it's distinctive color and repainted a new shade.

We had a ring of boat thieves down here locally, where they were hooking up to people's boat trailers and stashing the boats in the boonies. They would strip off things like the motors and electronics and just leave the stripped hull and trailer sitting there. They were so brazen they would remove a boat from beside someone's house while they were at work, in broad daylight.

Very disheartening that not a trace or clue has surfaced. I know David and his family must be really taking this hard. :( Anyone who has ever had something stolen knows how violated and helpless you feel afterward.
