Afriend of mine picked up a '50 merc. old school custom. It was lowered, had huge bubble skirts, faded blue paint with scallops, just a cool 'ol car. As with most of us he had to make it fit his wants. He had just chopped the top on a '37 ford truck and had fairly good luck, so this one was destined to loose a couple of inches. Top chop came out alright, however he was in for a shock (as was I ) when he got ready to chop the garnish mouldings. First of all they were chrome ( don't know if they came this way) and when he cut them he discovered that they were br***. He had tried to braze them back together but even with the smallest tip on the torch he keeps burning thru. Anyone had this problem before? If so what did ya do. Thanx Norm

If they are br***, use silver solder...Fumes from the flux are toxic, so be aware.

His merc is a Monterey. Saudering would be your best bet.

Yep, solder is probably his best bet. I tig weld br*** all the time and it works well, but it sounds like your buddy probably doesn't have that capability.

Silver takes a lot of heat and is VERY expensive.
