ok how about our fiends from the "great white north" i got a question , do USA citizens need a passport now to get into canada? jimv
It will make your life much easier if you have one. I think you can cross with a birth certificate instead though? I suppose different locations are more strict than others, but around here (Detroit) it seems having a passport is your best bet.
I've never taking my passport with me while crossing back and forth into Canada from Detroit. Stamped birth certificate is fine. Last July I forgot it and they still let me in and out with just a drivers license.
to get into Canada all you gotta do is show up I think, we accept all people, no discrimination here the government screws everybody PS bring your own lube though sometimes a shard of glass or piece of gravel can find its way in and that ain't no fun at all seriously I have no idea what you need to get in
It's supposed to be changing over the next few years to tighten security, so it probably isn't a bad idea to get a passport. Although,we made it over the border 2 years ago, and all my friend had was a business card and a smile, the people at the border are human to, it just depends on who's in a good mood, sometimes....
Along remote parts of prairies you can just drive across on farm roads. There are usually signs that tell you to report. If any one hassles you tell them you are coming to buy soft wood lumber and cattle . .but seriously When you enter Canada, a customs officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if one is necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card (i.e., green card) with you. On this end of the u.s. a passport is fine. Also be warned. If you have a d.u.i. you will be turned away. It's a phelony up there.[Alot of people have d.u.i.s in my neck of the woods]
I've been going to the Autorama in Detroit for 3-4 years now. During the weekend, my frinds and I would make a trip into Canada for the Casinos. No problem going into Canada. BUT coming back into the US, Holy Shit! The US Custom Nazis looked at our NJ drivers licenses (with Picture) and read us the riot act. Threatened us with not getting back in. Told us our NJ licenses weren't enough????? how did he know we were citizens? Told us the world is changing, we better get with the program. In short, get a passport. The next year we went, and had no trouble with passports. They let in all these illegals that can't even speak English, and give'm free hospitalization, and Welfare, but won't let in their own citizens.
I cross all the time - US side is much harder. All you need is your drivers licence and proof of citizenship - I use my birth certificate.
I occasionally hear this rumored but have not seen it confirmed in official Canadian writing. It's not mentioned on the posted site and I'm sure it probably would affect a lot of otherwise unknowing people. Can you provide an official confirmation?
I.ve been to Canada a couple of times, flew in to Vancouver once 27 years ago and Calgary the second time about 16 years ago. Both times the Canadian Customs desk was unmanned and just had a sign saying "welcome to Canada --> to taxis" or something like that. Coming back the second time, at the Calgary airport, we were headed towards our gate and there was a desk that said US Customs and there was a fat guy in a wrinkled uniform kicked back with his feet up reading a novel and quite ignoring the world around him. No signs saying to stop, no turnstyles jst a fairly wide walkway and this beatup formica counter/cubicle. So I slowly shuffled up to the front of the desk, and when the guy didn't even blink or breath I kept shuffling, not really knowing what i was supposed to do because there was no "stop here and wait till we're damn well ready" sign or nothin. So I get about three short steps past the desk and a voice says "WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING" I said "home?" He says "GET BACK OVER HERE, Don't you know you're supposed to stop?" I said, "I've never done this before, so, no I didn't know what I was supposed to do and you didn't even nod when I shuffled by so I figured it was like the California border vegetable stop at night on a holiday." as I shuffled back to his desk. So he says "Do you have anything to declare?" I said, "Just this Tshirt I'm wearing that says "Fairmont Hot Springs" on it and the roll of film in the camera...?" At which point he dropped the hardnose and laughed and said welcome home. But I really didn't know what to do and they act like everyone should automatically know their routine. Weird.
It's going to get a lot harder to get back and forth-see the current news articles. Might as well get one now and avoid the rush. They're good for 10 years unless you are a kid, then 5. Oh, and if you have kids, make sure you have lots of ID for them, too. Friends have almost landed in jail because they didn't have enough id for their adopted child. Like everything else with the government, you can't have too many pieces of paper.
At the minimum, have a picture ID and a birth certificate. Don't be surprised if the Canadian Customs agent hasn't got a firm grasp of the English language though........and I'm not talking about the other offical language of French. Quite a few are either Chinese or East Indian of some sort.
NO/2006.....As of the new year coming,I know any Canadian must have a passport to enter the U.S.I am pretty sure the same goes for a American coming to Canada.
Sounds like a sensible plan...all things considered. Let me guess though. A Canadian passport is expensive right? Just another excuse for the Gov to shake loose some coin.
as a truck driver, they have NEVER asked me for more than my license, and even then they seldom give it more than a casual glance going INTO Canada... comming back into the US they are a bit more sticky, but that is mostly due to hauling cargo back into the states. that said, its been over a year since i was up to winterpeg so things may have changed
Nothing worth seeing in Canada. I suggest heading to Iraq, much nicer country and better drivers. Seriously though, no you don't need a Passport. Driver's licence and a Birth Cert will do fine. (I have to go through 4 border crossings a week for my job...)
