Does anyone know where to find those nuts and bolts Ford used to attach the backing plate to the spindle on '39 and up spindles? They are 1/2 inch fine thread with a square head and some unique nuts. I've checked my usual sources and am coming up with zip.
Here you go: http://www.earlyford.com/images/32-48_2010_Web_Catalog.pdf Look at page 12, item number 59A-2056. I think that is what they are referring to, but call and ask them for sure. Don
I believe i have a couple sets, i have backing plate and squareback spindle and they look right. These might be model a, i keep parts by the catagory, not year. Where in the valley are you, i am in Berryville - give me a shout at 540-955-0479 if you're in a hurry or you could try to order them from Brattons over on Maryland.
Thanks. I see the listing for the bolts but I wonder if they have those "special" nuts that go with them.
They are 'castle' nuts and Brattons' is in Mt Airy but i was wrong about model 'a' being the same, at least the replacement bolts they offered were hex. Harrisonburg is a hike, i have been to known to hit the Whittacre for a "machine' concert.
Lke OJ said, the nuts are just castle nuts, nothing special there. Any bolt house should be able to fix you up with those. I think they are the same size as used on Ford tie rod ends, if I am not mistaken. Don
I have a few original sets of those and most the ones that I have are not castle nuts.......they appear to be some sort of lock nut. I do have a few bolts that have the hole for a cotter key so they must take the castle nut. I know the two sets I took off the '56 pickup backing plates where the type of locking nut? All of the bolts have the square head that lock themselves against the round lip on the spindle.
The Nuts changed throughout the years, Im pretty sure 46-48 used a self locking nut, with slots that look like a castelated nut, but very thin. the outer end of the nut would have been 'pinched' in manufacture to provide a self locking effect. the bolts for those years still had the split pin hole. I like to use them to attach 32 spreader bars , after getting them Chromed. the square flat head looks much cleaner than a fat hex head in this location ,and gives an oem look i think. I have a bit of a thing for original fasteners.. so much nicer than generic bolts.
Those bolts are a pain in the ***. I replaced all of mine with socket head bolts & locking nuts. ****on head works as well. Unless you are trying to restore to perfection, they aren't worth the effort because nobody will see them.
