I'm doing a ride and its a budget beater. What is the best brand o primer or flat paint in a rattle can? I want to get the most uniform black sheen I can get...your help would be greatly appreciated?

    John Deere "Blitz Black"

  4. It's called "Trim Black" , it's made by SEM. It's such a perfect & even flat black you could paint the Billboards or the hood blackout on a Cuda with the spray bomb can with absolute uniformity. Everyone should have about 5 cans of it setting around. Most every other flat black we've used streaks, has shiny spots, you can't jump right in the middle of a large area & touch up and have it not show up, this you can. A lot body shop supply houses have a display SEM products, it's about $4.00 a can, but they're the tall cans, most of all it has fan spray like a paint gun instead of the golf ball size round spot the others leave.

Yeah John Deere wants a mint for any of their stuff. Caterpillar is the way to go if you don't go to Home Depot and just get some Rustoleum.

It's been said already, but go to HomeCheapo and buy Rustoleum -- it comes in both a flat and a satin finish. And, rather than buy rattle cans for $4 a pop, buy it by the quart for $7 and paint a whole car! It can be applied with a brush or with a gun (after adding about 15% thinner), and dries to a very hard finish.

how much is the tim black by SEM?

it looks expensive thus defeating the purpose of going with rattle can. but so is the dupont rattle cans.

I'll second the vote for the SEM products. They make a rattle can metal-etching primer too, great stuff -- unless you're into the rust-o look.

I like the Krylon semi-flat black. That is what this is. It's either pt# 1316 or 1613. I like the look and it's easy to blend on large panels.

My experience with Rustoleum isn't good, takes too long to dry and if you try to respray after it cures, the paint will curdle.

SEM is the best way to go, but I just 'rattle canned' a car with Krylon 1613 Semi Flat Black. It streaked, but I shot straight enamel reducer over it and softened the streaks alot.

I'm gonna SEM the next one.

  16. I'll second that Orchard Supply Hardware satin black. I've used it on a ton of parts. Good stuff Maynard!!!

  18. I've used em all. But for a BUDGET rattle can job, I like to use Autozone's Flat Black Paint. It's about a dollar per can, comes in a yellow and black can. Sprays clean & even, dries fast, doesn't seem to fade, and has good coverage.

I'm sure there's better paints out there, but for a buck a can...you can't beat it.

JD Blitz black is great-but it costs a bundle-about $6 per can. As for Rustoleum-I've had more runs, drips, errors and primer bubbling with this stuff than any other brand. I like Krylon-reasonable price at Wal-Mart, great coverage, good looks. I like the satin black, too. Nice finish, deeper than the flat black.

I gotta agree with the SEM Trim Black. That stuff is the ****. Like was said, it goes on smooth and easy, and has a nice suede to it. Seems to have a higher solid count than most primers...probly why it blends so well. Yeah it costs more but we're still talkin' low buck. Just doesn't have to *look* low buck.
