Heat up the race red hot then throw some cold water on it, might shick it off. Or, if your good with a torch start cutting, get at it fast and the hard metal should get hot and cut away and leave the spindle fine, done it many times on tractors and ag stuff.

I started working on it with a dremel an a chisel last night and I got about half I the race off.

It's being a complete pain in the ***, but at least the spindle, thus far, appears to be still in amazing shape

I'm gonna try again tonight and use some heat in addition to the chisel this time around

This was my '84 Chevy wagon, machine shop parts chaser, really a quiet car. It was maybe 10* out when I left the shop at 9 PM... figured the pop was something frozen under the car. Drove it home 10 miles @ 75-80, smooth as silk, left home the next morning, got less than a 1/2 mile and heard the guts rolling around in the hubcap.

Arc weld (mig or stick) all the way around the race thats left with lots of heat. Wait about a minute and knock the ******ed race off. Done it many times on trailers, car spindles and even outer races in dif housings. Old trick my Dad showed me probably 50 years ago,

Just grind throught it with a small angle grinder it's easer to tell how deep your going.

I used the grinder myself and it went quick. I was dressed for work, nice pants, shirt, leather jacket. Got home and started pulling it apart at 6:15 AM... talk about cold using an air grinder at 16*...

Taped off the rest of the spindle with layers of duct tape, went maybe 3/4 of the way thru the race, gave it a whack with a chisel and BFH, still have the race around somewhere. It came right off, shoe shined the spindle with emery cloth and I did have to make a parts house run for cotter pins... all my **** around the shop and NO cotter pins. I made it to work at 9:30.

I've done several with the cutoff wheel and chisel. I make a deep cut almost through the race, then stick the chisel into the cut and hit it. They usually break easily once relieved, and then come off.

    I finally got it off!!!!

    Oh my LORD!

It was practically like peeling a metallic orange. I used a dremel and cut almost al the way through it. Hen I heated it with a torch and started whacking at it with a chisel. After it finally came off, I cleaned off all of the burrs with some emery cloth. Now, the spindle looks like brand new, again!

Thanks to all of you for your help in all of this. This forum is amazing!

I've done maybe 12 of them over the years, used air chisels, diamond blade hacksaws (real slow...), but the grinder is the quickest. One more skill you have mastered.

dremel with cutoff wheel work great for this problem and also using a carbide bit will work though can get spendy.
