I have been driving my model a almost everyday for the last 4 years in LA. Is it dangerous, maybe but so is crossing the street. My opinion is that it is less dangerous cause most accidents are caused by people who don't pay attention, and a model a driving around gets nothing but attention. Just my 2¢

Miller dropped the greatest link and story you'll ever read in regards to driving an A

If you didn't catch the link I highly recommend that you check it out now.

    Weed.....be careful.
Watched a biker I rode with a couple of times miss a sharp corner after he had toked about 5 or 6 dubies and trying to adjust the volume on his cd player. Straight into the farmhouse lawn across the driveway to the other side of the lawn just missing a pole. He managed to keep it straight up and stopped! Lucky this time!

Did I miss something in the original post? Because I never saw where he said he smoked pot and drove the car?

  6. I think what they're getting at is that both weed and drink have effects other than the immediate one of intoxication.

5 or 6 dubies? I'm surprised he was able to find his bike, let alone ride it. Yikes.

Actually, when I read his casual confession about smoking pot I thought "Oh great, now we're going to have a bunch of 'adults' telling him how cool it is and how pot should be legal and how nudge-nudge wink-wink we all do it." The fact that so many have NOT done that impresses me.

When I was growing up in the hobby, there were the rodders and the stoners and the two never mixed. If you had time/money to party, that meant you weren't serious about the cars.....

It's safer than a motorcycle but not quite as safe as a Volvo.

It's a discussion about degrees. What degree of safety are you comfortable with? If you must have the safest vehicle, then an 18 wheeler would be even safer than a Volvo if the two wrecked. The Volvo drivers chose to trade some safety for practicality. Like them, we also decided to trade some safety - for coolness. Is that stupid? It's just as stupid as driving a Volvo instead of an 18 wheeler.

Your friend does have a point - a Model A is not as safe as a most modern cars. But it still does have some degree of safety. It's not completely devoid of safety. It is safe. It's just not as safe as a modern car. You're still surrounded by metal. I'm comfortable with that, even though there are safer choices out there. I'm willing to trade a little safety (but not all safety) for some other things.

Volvo drivers probably wouldn't understand. They think getting grease under your fingernails and hearing the engine are bad experiences. They're not bad people, they just have different priorities. It's only our arrogance that makes us think the other guy is stupid for driving a Volvo or a Model A. They probably had the same stupid grin on their face as you did the first time they drove their car.

Make sure you don't have greasy clothes if you climb into their Volvo. If they ride with you, cover their seat and drive it like a granny. As for the rest of the time - if it puts a stupid grin on your face, drive it every day!

By the way, a train is much safer than an 18 wheeler. No other vehicle has that much momentum, has it's own road, and has flashing lights on boards that come down to stop all the other vehicles while it goes by. But most people are willing to trade all that safety merely to park in their own driveways and keep their own schedules. :)

The weight of a Model A and a modern car are closer than the weight of a motorcycle vs. a car. The following videos illustrate how the weight of a vehicle makes it safer in a wreck.

    Train vs. 18 Wheeler
    http://youtu.be/JBTKgbGTKUs

    18 wheeler vs. Large SUV
    http://youtu.be/dsEAOBrK81A

    Car vs. motorcycle
    http://youtu.be/RayrpGqRPwA

Couldn't find any Hot Rod vs. Volvo or hot rod vs. modern car wrecks. I don't think the modern car would, "drive through" the Model A as the vehicles in these videos did. They would be about the same weight (approximately). Therefore, you have some degree of safety.

  12. Hey the laws have changed in several states this election ya know......
I think if you were wearing seat belts and have a collapsable steering column, you are probably as safe as the next shitbox across the lane from you in traffic......Only difference is IF you are runnin those stock A bumpers you could hit them at 35 MPH and bounce off with no car damage while theirs would be totaled...Ha!

In the future, as our civilization progresses....:

    1) Safety - Nothing is worth doing if it involves any risk of bodily harm. We will wear helmets and knee pads while having sexual intercourse with our monogamous, same sex partner and will conduct ourselves in a manner that in no way increases our insurance premium.

    2) Our Insurance Premium will be the second largest expense. Our largest expense will be Taxes. Our third largest expense will be organic, gluten free vegetation that eat in lieu of food. We will eat lots of it, because we will all wants women with "curves".

    3) Racism will be abolished once and for all. That is because there will be no more races. Decades of interracial porn will see to that. There will be no more Latinos. there will be no more Asians. There will be no more Causcasian people, no more Negroes. There will only be Wegroes.

    4) Industry will be a thing of the past. Nothing will be produced...everything will be computed generated. The money we make selling each other insurance policies will be spent on Taxes, Insurance, Food, and app downloads.

There's more but I haven't worked out all the finer details just yet.

I'd love to drive my cars every day but the insurance company doesn't allow it.

Cant hardly tell by his spelling that he is a doper..... Id be more worried driving ANY car while high on grass than driving a model a while sober. Love this place and some of the questions.

On the freeways around LA? My God a Model A is way way more safe than a motorcycle.

I'd just make sure the steering, brakes, suspension are always in very good shape. Cool car.

pickup truck. You will be fine using your Model A as a daily driver and you will be having fun and living the life you want.

There's always gonna be someone trying to tell you what you can/can't should/shouldn't do. Phooey. If you enjoy it and it gets you there and back, drive it.

You'd better pay special attention to the anti-weed guys though. 'Cause they know what they're talking about.

New cars take all of the fun out of driving. I have an older car O/T because it is a 68 but I love to drive it to work. It gets more attention than the bosses in their BMWs and other euro-trash cars.

Also, you can always just get regular insurance for your daily, but if it gets totaled like my Comet did, it's only worth blue book to them which in my case I think was about $1,200... (at least I yanked the 302/C4/8"...)

As for Model A bodies, I remember Robert Williams telling me "Yeah, when these things get hit, they just come all apart"
