Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and stumbled across it while researching a little more about nitro. I didn't want to hi-jack this thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...14&highlight=nitro+malcolm+flathead&showall=1 so I am making another. I have been intrested in modifying a Holley carb for sometime, and after a few experiments with lawn mowers and a few other small engines I thought I was ready to try it on my car. I ran into a few stumbling blocks getting it to idle and a few other things. That was until I found the Sept. 2005 issue of DragRacer magazine with the artical about JR Bloom and his formulas with Strombergs. I knew nothing about those carbs, so more research was needed until I could convert it somewhat over to a Holley. I used this chart that was on page 43 of the magazine. What I have found is that there is little to no information out there about this. I'm sure someone here has experimented with this and I would like to share any info someone might have along with my own. My wife recorded a little video a while ago and since then I've made a few more adjustments on the "driveability" and feel its ready to hit the track or maybe a ch***is dyno. Sorry about the quality, but you can get an idea. http://s3.beta.photobucket.com/user/fastfuel/media/DSCI0002.mp4.html This was threw the mufflers out of consern for my neighbors, lol. Last but not least, here is a pic of the carb. I'll try to add to this later as I gather and organize my notes later today, but I'm really intrested in others and what you've done. Thanks.
Thanks for the welcomes. I'm mixing it right now with E85, I started with around 75% and am probably closer to 85% right now. I have been mixing it by volume and I have access to a hydrometer, mixin it by volume is pretty close usually resulting in tenths of a percent difference. It's not to critical at this point.
Back in the early 60's I tuned several fuel burning engines. John Moore(Mordrop Axles) dragster, a Pontiac slant four (1/2 of a v8) with Algon injectors. I would warm it up on Alcohol, and then switch to Nitro 98%. Gasoline runs good at about 14-16% fuel to air, alcohol around 8-10% and nitro probably about 2%. my figures might be off, it's been many years, but Nitro must be very rich compared with gas. A nitro engine will almost, or will, run with no air.
