I own a '58 Chevy overdrive 3-speed manual transmission that I want to put in my 55 Chevy. I've been looking at pictures of an original 3-speed manual for it, and to my eye it looks to be pretty damn close to the same length. Is it? I don't own the original 55 Chevy non-OD 3-speed manual transmission, so I can't just measure it out for myself. I've included a picture of the overdrive 3-speed for the 55 Chevy as compared to the 58 Chevy overdrive 3-speed which is also compared to a stock 55 Chevy 3-speed. Are my eyes off? They look pretty close to me. I want to know so that I will know if I can keep the stock 3-speed driveshaft.
I would think it would work. The only thing you might have to do is change the length of the drive shaft, but you might get lucky. Transmission mount isn't a problem as 55's had no mount on the tail shaft because of the 4 mounts on the motor.
I want to be able to use as many original parts as possible, so it'll be real cool if it all bolts up. It's going to take me a few more months before I'll find out. Once I do, I'll post pictures.
