I don't even have a latch on mine yet. But I'm gonna use the old VW latch n striker with a cable going through the floor to a handle underneath.

I've done it a couple of ways, both wrecking yard parts. You can get a cable and manual activator set up from any number of cars that have the lever beside the drivers seat, along with the trunk latch mechanism or you can get an electric from a Cad or Buick.

Used an old cable pull trunk latch mechanism with a choke cable routed to the gas tank door. Simple and accessible, but not out in the open.

I fabbed mine up using a cable and parts from a hand brake on a bicycle and the stock trunk latch. Running to the gas door. I did have a nut come loose on it once and I had to crawl thru from the rear seat but that was my fault.

I keep looking at the trunk latch lever that sits down at the front corner of the seat in my 92 Geo Prizm (same as Toyota Corolla) thinking that it would work pretty good with a shaved trunk latch. I'm not sure how easy the cable would be to pull out of one of those boxes with wheels but the whole setup from handle to striker should be dirt cheap at the wrecking yards.

I used a early 70's camaro latch & striker. I mounted the striker in trunk lid and welded latch on to sill panel, drilled hole through floor put cable through it. Reach up under bumper pull cable.
