Autoslim asked about info on the strait axle set up on my Comet so I'm posting info here. Y'all jump in with any info you have. My set up is based on an Econoline axle. I have Streetrod manufacturing disc brake kit part#1190, calipers P# 3100, braided steel hose P# 3702-16 front brake pads Carquest BMD 154 78 to 83 chevelle calipers Carquest master cylinder P# 20-1485 Wildwood adj. proportioning valve P# 260-220 Stock 65 Comet steering box HCC AM 4M23B 48" tie rod and adaptors from Speedway Rear brakes (Speedway) hats 170-0317 rotors 160-0471 caliper R 910-31045R GM metric 7/16"-20 caliper L 910-31045L pads 919-1562 GM mSuper Stopper metric slide bolts 910-31099 brakets 916-41010 GM metric brake braket caliper fittings 617-4132 flex hose 910-31893 tee, thru panel 617-4330 nut for tee 617-6187 clamps 910-31312 adaptor 191-787 More tomorrow.
The axle is off e-bay from under an unfinished Falcon project. It is based on Econoline and uses Econoline spindles and springs and is cross steer. It is raining tonight and I race tomorrow so I'll try for better pics Thursday.
Judd, Your da man! I've been carrying around the Speedway catalog for the past few days and spending all my spare time looking for FE stuff in the cl***ifieds. I also got the HotRod mag with the Mr. Rich altered wheelbase instructions. Pure sickness. Anyone ever see a 64 Comet Post Sedan g***er/afx/bfx? Kinda ugly, but then again I ain't cutting up anything collectable. autoslim 64 Comet Post w/ a tissue box on the package tray
'64 Comets were a**** the baddest A/FX cars of the day. Most I ever saw pictures of were two door hardtops. The notable exception was the Sox and Martin station wagon. They had high-riser 427 FE motors, gl*** front ends, teardrop hoods, and air intakes thru the inner headlight hole.
Cool car. I see the pics and I start hearing FE motors reving. Great do***entation, too. I appreciate the part numbers and dimensional drawing.
Judd, Thanks for the p***engers side photos. Didn't know if you had a steering arm added or you grabbed the drag link for your cross steer. With the drum econoline drum brakes, it didn't look like I had room for a arm bolted to the top two holes in the spindle. Scored a econo axle and a 57 Fairlane 9 inch last Saturday at the boneyard. Bout had heat stroke, but was thrilled to get this project rollin. Thanks again, Bud. Autoslim
Autoslim, here some info on the set-up I put together. It is for my 64 Fairlane, which is similar to the Comet/Falcon. The stock econo axle will be a little too wide for the Comet/Falcon and will need shortening. Here are parts I used 65 econo axle (shortened 5½ ") stock econo spindles (machined spindles to adapt 65-66 Mustang disc brakes). 65-66 Mustang 4 piston KH calipers, caliper brackets, rotors and brake hoses (bearings are the same for Econo & Mustang). Custom made steering arms (didn't like the look of the original econo arms) Still need to tig weld on steering stops. stock Fairlane steering box stock pitman arm (modified tapered hole for tie-rod) custom drag link and center link (made from 7/8" 4140, 11/16-18 left & right threads machined on either side) moog tie-rods ES2221L & ES2223R (spindle to spindle) moog tie-rods ES2221L & ES416R (steering arm to box) moog adj sleeves ES426S custom made steering arm to connect RH spindle to steering box (made from 3½" X 3½" X ½" angle) custom leaf springs (car sits exactly 24" from center of crank to ground and axle set aT 7* deg positive caster) front view p*** side driver side side view
Guys, Thanks for all the pic`s . It gives me some good ideas for my Falcon. Also appreciate the part numbers that helps alot. G***erman
Very nice set up and craftsmanship, do you plan on using a sway bar? here some info on the set-up I put together. It is for my 64 Fairlane, which is similar to the Comet/Falcon. Thanks, I will not be using a sway bar. Will be adding front shocks after the car is fully ***embled. Need to figure out what shock will fit and then find/fabricate shock mounts.
