Looking for Mike McCandles, son of Mr. 4 Speed, Herb. He had asked for any info or pictures of his dad when he was younger. I watched Herb for years at the old Lakeland Drag Strip outside of Memphis, Tenn. I do have a picture of his car from 1967. For history- True story!! Once, for the last race of the day, Herb was on the line and 1 carb was not right. He jumped out of his car, asked me for my pit p***, tore it in half, shoved the torn part in the carb, so it would be wide open, got back in and won the race! Back then, in the early days you could get away with stuff like this. My picture shows his car with the hood up in the pits. In those days, Lakelands pits were all gravel. When you pulled up at the end of the start line, you had someone to wipe your tires off. I have other pictures of old cars from this time at Lakeland! I have been lucky enough to see TV Tommy Ivo, the Snake and ****oose races, Big Daddy and many others at this track. Sadly it was lost by Coleman and Taylor who ran it. But, THOSE WERE THE GREAT DAYS OF DRAG RACING! Anyone else remember this track during the 60's?
