What are you working on this weekend?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kerry, Sep 3, 2005.

  1. The headers are looking good Kerry. I especially like the primary tubes curved into the cone/megaphone/whatever you call it.
Extra work, but way worth it.
Going straight in with the primaries doesn't look right and the turbulence they add isn't going to help flow any.

Far as getting stuff done . . . replaced the front disc pads on the 32.
I got to thinking it was about time.
Twelve years after startup and 42,000 miles.
Looking at them it did look like they were getting thin and the narrow non-worn area added to my decision to swap em out.

Once I got em off, I could see they were only half worn.
Put the new pads in anyway and stuck the old ones on the shelf.
Guess the light weight of the 2400# roadster with brakes from a 3400# car and my easy driving - most times - made em last a long while.

Doing a little writing on a new short story that should probably be called a medium story.
I never seem to be able to keep to the usual short story format of 4-5 pages.
    Maybe I should write a book....:D

Today, poison some more weeds, do a little weedwhacking and go get a new set of spark plugs.
    Probably about time.
I'm on my 2nd set since fire-up and I think this set has quite a few miles on them.

The Wings and Wheels 2 day show is coming up Oct 1st and 2nd.
A nice car/airplane show and they're gonna let us run the 1/8 mile strip.
No clocks, just run what you brung sorta redlight/green light street racing style.
Gonna find out just how fast CK's roadster is . . . or find out how slow mine is....
    The bets are on. :D

  3. I'm with you on on being busy. Although it's a long weekend between church, yardwork, and a birthday party here for my mother in law I'm not getting nearly as much shop time as I'd hoped.

Thanks for the kind words. The pictures are sort of forgiving. They are just plain steel. The cone is half of a 36 Ford driveshaft. Gonna aluminum powder coat them when done. Hope it hides a few things.

Jay, the exit for the main exhast is going to curve in as well. Like you said, it should be more efficient. Hope so. Need some more HP! ;-) It's gotta be better than the oem cast manifolds. Pretty awesome brake lifetime, btw! Anything new to be published soon? Defintley post the results of the C9/CK showdown!

  4. Doing the book rewrite - with a lot of distractions, life's kinda like that - so it'll be a while before it's to the publishable stage.
I'm hoping six months or so.

I'll take my digi-cam and post some of the wheels and wings stuff.

How are you doing the pipe to the mufflers bit?
Right now I'm thinking of doing something on the 31 along the lines of AV8's Bluey.
If I can keep the exhaust system out from under the car it sure will help.
Mainly in leaving room for in the chassis/under the body gas tanks.

The pic shows a mockup of some Schoenfeld sprint car headers that I'm pretty sure I'm going to use.
A big time-saver over the in the frame headers I built for the 32.

I love the way you Oz and NZ HAMBers talk. Keeps us Yanks on our toes trying to figure out which part of the car you're talking about. "Boot" what we call the trunk.

No car stuff got done, just clean the kitchen floor, skim the the crap the thunderstorm put in the pool and finish painting the bookcase so there is more space in the garage to work on the RPU.

Are you going to play skittles with the bottles when you're finished?

  8. I've spent the weekend in a parallel universe - it is identical to this one but for four very important differences;

    1. The cut off dates for hot/street rods is 1955 so it includes shoe box fords
    2. The rod of choice is a 35 Chevy and not a 32 Ford
    3. There were five gears and not four on the British Leyland Mini Metro
    4. Citroen did not end the Parisian production of the 2CV until 1996 (i.e. they never opened the Portugese assembly line) and from 1989 there was an 850cc option available (based on the Panhard flat twin).

Yeah I wanna see more about that wheel too.

I put a new battery and cables in the '64 Olds yesterday (woohoo! hard work I tell ya)...drove it around for a while and ran into another hamber drivin' a '63 Ford. I've seen it many times in my area and found myself behind him at a light.

Cool ride, Jason. Glad I stopped it was good to me ya.

I had some arm rests for the 55 recovered and fitted them. Is it some sort of custom trick to remove the arm rests from the doors? The only way to close the doors was to wind the window down or pull on the door handle which breaks them.

Then went to check on the steering wheel that a local restorer guy is redoing for me. He said the wheel was the worst one he had ever done. :( Looks really good now. Just needs the final paint.

I didn't have much time to do anything else as the 4 year old grandaughter was here for the weekend. Anyone with grandkids knows how much time they can take up. And it's quality time. :)

  13. Very funny Dr Zod....
As long as she is the quiet type...;)
Talk to ya this week on Zeke's Rainbow chat line...??:p

"Cruisin'...... what sort of body you got coming? What style of T are you thinking of? I'm heading to Auckland this coming weekend to play a gig with Al Dawson at the Auckland Rock and Roll Club. Quite a few rodders turn up... Neil Roper, Dave McMahon......."

Rock, it's gonna be a 23T extended in the door section slightly and the rest will be hand fab. (Tray etc.)
Low down and dirty  or low down at least...:D
Still looking for lotsa stuff. :)
By the way, did I mention it's gotta have 3 pedals...?
I will have to check with the social director re the weekend, not sure what she has planned. Haven't had the pleasure of hearin' ya play yet!
If you are headin' South at a reasonable hour.. you are welcome to drop by for a coffee etc.
Karaka is 1/2 hour South of the big smoke.
    Cheers,
    C:cool:

  14. So far this weekend...

Got the rampback truck plates and registration
New e-brake cables on the truck
Changed the plugs to get rid of a miss
Changed the oil - looked like tar!
Topped up the trans - it was down 3 quarts!
Rewelded on the headache rack with some extra supports
Rewired the rear lights and moved them so they can seen better
    Re-installed the mirrors
Cleaned all the crap off the back
    Reinstalled the rubber floor mat
    Reinstalled the bench seat
Adjusted the windows so the work smoothly
Chased down the reason the truck wouldn't spin the starter from the key - bad neutral safety switch
    Solderd several questionable wiring connections.
    Replaced the burned out lights
Replaced the headlights for ones that had working highbeams
    Installed the 8000lb winch
Installed the second battery tray with the deep cycle battery for the winch

    Slept.

I'm still learning this stuff from my invisible cat :)
I used Smoothon.com's Clear 202 plastic and House Of Kolors
White Pearl. mixed. The trick is you must wait for the Plastic to kick!
So you just mix a little at a time and put it on like peanut butter with a paint knife. If its to thin it will flow out and look like just pearl paint/ no swirls.
Even when its like peanutbutter it will still flow, so you have to watch it close.
Kind of a controlled run I guess. I still had to fix the wheel with PC-7 and stuff.
The knob had a little candy green mixed in and came out wild too.
The round cover is a part I made because I'm missing the center plastic.
But with the pearl coat it should look OK. Its tricky I don't have it down good yet But some stuff is coming out real nice.
    Jdee
PS: I did paint the Wheel White base coat before I put the Plastic on.
    same with the center cap.

    Cool JDee...

I've done some casting too, but for smaller stuff that would get painted. I suspected that was what ya were doin' but wasn't sure where the pearl was comin' from. So yer waitin' 'til it starts to kick? I'm cornfused there...the casting materials I've used won't flow once it starts to kick. Ya gotta have it poured when it's still all liquid before it kicks. You must me using a different product than I did. What is it called? I know how to make molds...I can see comin' up with some pretty cool looks with that for other interior parts too.

    Thanks,

Wasn't going to work on anything this weekend, worked saturday, partied too hard saturday night so didn't feel like doing a whole bunch.
Mocked up the frame at ride height, figured out the crossmember angle cut some slats in the front of the frame to slide the crossmember in after I squared it up.
Measured and measured and measured a bit more, the frame is so perfect its retarded. I'm awfully happy with the work I've done to do it so far.
Welded the rails inplace on these little square tubing pieces for a mocked up ride height. Tacked the front crossmember in place and tacked the rear inplace.
Tomorrow I'd like to finish welding the crossmembers in get it off of the tubing maybe. And see what else I want to do. Should mount the motor and tranny where I want them, we'll see tomorrow.

Believe it or not, I've spent alot of time over the past four days putting bullets in the center of my wheels. I had a hell of a time figuring out how to attach them.

I bought two stainless steel glasses at Bed, Bath & Beyond to hammer and shape into an inner center cap, to attach the bullets to. I like the second design that I came up with best, so now I gotta make a trip back after a third glass because I screwed the first one up. I could probably still use it, but like I said, I like the second design best.

I think it turned out rather well, kinda like cheap spiders:)

I also bought a Radient heat setup for the shop
    a big parts cleaner
another big nuts and bolts bin
a brake, shear and roll for sheetmetal
an electric band saw for steel and a big ass anvil.

Got my tig up and running perfect too-

I burned up a 50 pound spool of wire building all that shit- and only took 3 quarts of paint...

  29. Where did this weekend go?!?!?!
All the bodywork on the '28 is done except for the deck lid, which I half-ass'edly started today. Yesterday I started frenching the driver's side headlight of bondoracer49's Chevy and after dinner I'm gonna go over and try to finish it up. I'll post some pics when its done. Anyway, back to the roadster, now its time to get the doors cut in and hung, clean up the Flathead, put a cam in it and bolt it all together.........
