old school is not a fad i have always been into old school, thanks to my dad. hot rods, g***ers and street freaks, muscle cars anything that has ''the old school look''. as a kid growing up i just knew them as hot rods not this cl***ification of groups. back then a hot rod was a hot rod and everyone got along. then the 80's-90's look hit the hot rods around me at car shows . even as i kid (born in 84') i never could understand the 15''-17'' billet wheel thing from the 80's with the ugly prime and boyd wheels and the now with the 18''-22'' wheels. i'll even take the lowered tubbed big motor pro-street look over the big wheel look anyday.

also this car is not mine. i built this car for a neighbor friend of ours. i talked him into rebuilding this car g***er style and leaving to old paint alone. it took alot to convince him i could do the job . to him i was just a young neighbor kid that did work behind our house and was into cars. he came over and seen the roll cage i built in a jeep i did for a customer and the back-half job i did in my younger brothers chevelle. we all had fun building this car together, all of us you can tell in the pics. friends getting together to build a hot rod, nothing better. so the hater's can hate that's what they do.

Three years later, and the same **** starts again, with the same people. Get over it.
The car looks great, and it's built the way the owner likes it, so it really doesn't matter if anyone else likes it, or wants it changed.
I suppose everyone built them exactly the same back in the 60's, but that must have been a different 60's than I lived through, as I saw all sorts of different versions back then. But then I'm old and maybe my memory isn't too good.

The car is awesome to me that way it is. And if the owner likes it that's all the better and, well isn't that what hot rodding is all about? Making it YOUR way and enjoying it? I also think to make it "period perfect", it could be done almost any way you'd like using parts from that era or earlier. There's more than one way to skin a cat. Oh well, Merry Christmas and enjoy!!!

I guess it all depends on exact style too. Someone from this era chime in. In g***er car era I'm sure there was many of both style(radius and non). I'm sure the HS kids didn't have the money to straight axle, radius rears so those were more post-hs aged guys cars. High school parking lots probably had the raised original front ends, bumper gone, 7" wheels on back.
My first memory of g***ers was a construction worker down the the road. It was 1979 he was a hippy shoot his hair looked liked Seghi's. lol His car was 55 wagon, all grey primer. It was more streak freakish now thinking about it since it was raised all the way around. That was the same summer I saw American Graffiti too. very impressionable and I remember them well. fresh out of 1st grade. lol

Beautiful work on this '55 Chevy.

Back in the 70's this car would've been known as a Highboy or Street Machine. The lift is level and the outward appearance is conservative of nature. We saw these by the dozens in high school back in the late 60's and early 70's. If guys didn't run a straight axle, they built raised spindles:eek:. A g***er? Might be a stretch. The street freaks were off the chart with mod's. Tyically they had tires sticking a good 2 to 3 inches outside the fender. The lift was 12" or taller and the induction systems came close to cresting the roof line. Take a look at Vince Mule's '55 Chevy. That's a great example.

I have a 55 4dr just a cruiser, lowered I guess someone in town was griping about "that 55 with orange wheels" and old paint. I bet they don't have a car or its broke down. I told my friend tell them I drive mine and put 3300 miles on it in 6mos.
keep building them 55's anyway other than a billet queent

  18. Having read the entire thread, I gotta put my 2 cents in, for whatever they're worth. First of all, I can see where some of the readers get all bent out of shape over the term "barn find g***er". I'll admit that when I typed in 55 chevy g***er into the search bar here and hit enter, I got excited when I read barn find g***er. It's what most gearheads that are into 55 chevys wanna see. But as I followed along the thread, I could clearly see that it wasn't what I had initially thought, but I didn't lose complete interest, I wanted to see the final product. Personally, I prefer the straight axle, flip front end end sans front bumper, big block chevy, 4 or 5 spd ******, 12 bolt posi rear end, with the rear wheelwells radiused look of a g***er, but the one you built for your friend is awesome too. It's got an aggressive stance and he's happy with it, that's all that matters!

The step ladder high all around stance and sideways mounted carbs just screams street freak to me. But it it's a nice street freak.

I'm back !!!!! It's been several years since I've been on here and a lot has changed. I'm alot older and wiser. I ain't no punk *** kid no more that's for sure! And the best news of all is that me and my dad purchased this 55 g***er from our neighbor that I helped built it for. And it has undergone a lot of changes. I'm sure that now that it is in proper hands all you will be happy with the changes. [emoji6]
But I could care less honestly I rebuilt this car with what me and my dad wanted to do, plain and simple. If it's your cup of tea GREAT, if not look somewhere else man. There's probably millions of threads on here alone. I'm just updating for those who are interested on how this car has been changed, even if it's just a few. FYI this car will never be for sale. This is a "family car".

Look for updates not only how the car is now but filling in what happened since the last time I post it on here. Just a little teaser.

Interesting thread. LOL. I grew up in the 70's and the Street Freaks were pretty cool. I can admit that they were likely the equal of cars with 20's on them today. A bit of a fad but since they were the cool cars in my early teen years, I still like them. I can understand others not.

This car (was) in between. Not pure g***er and not really high enough for a true Street Freak. I didn't cut my quarters either. There wasn't really any need to. Many cars back in the day also did not get cut. Mine doesn't sit high in the rear though. Many of the new recent events limit tire width. Mine will fit 8-9 inch just fine.

Anyway, will be interested in the changes. (hopefully the drag link as noted).

It's just a weird picture illusion. All these pictures were taken with my old ****py cell phone. Also the speedway big block front motor mount is just for mock up, building a custom one. It just doesn't look right.

Like I said it's a weird camera illusion the bar is flat but the steering arm riser were not my design but it does have a nice big thick gusset on it and that is being changed. some of you know when you're building a car for somebody they want to design stuff too even if it's not the best LOL. But trust me there is a lots of changes on stuff that I did not design and the car was finished after I did most of the welding and fabrication on it. There is a wall of rejects, just sit back and wait you'll see what I mean.

Good that you got the car. Blown 396 may make slightly more than the 300hp written on it.
Now that it's your car, you could start a new thread, and let this one die. It's contaminated. Think of it as a ''restart''. You can repost the build pix, and show us more of the new stuff, without the previous ****.
