Ok,here it goes I have a 27 t roadster modified model a frame,4 link in rear with coiloversmy problem is that when I get the car at 45 mph I get wheel hop from p***enger tire I don't no why,can anyone guide me to problem, I think its rear axle shaft it has a 9 nine rear I was told, also can anyone tell me what year differential came with 28 spline 31 inch, so I can order shaft. Ur help is greatlyappriciated
Sounds more like a wheel or tire problem that axle. Have you tried switching the right and left tires or different rear tires altogether?
rims need to be checked for ture on the car/both out of round ans side to side, also the tires and also there balance, after that see if the shock is mounted at too much angel or too close to center of car[need to be out closer to tires?] bent axle?check
Jack the rear end up and spin the wheels, any wobble will be obvious. Easy to tell if it's the wheel or the axle.
Since you've changed tires and wheels and it didn't fix it, the axle might be slightly bent. Putting it up in the air and letting it idle in gear should show if anything is out. After that you need to determine the width of the housing so you can figure out what donor car it came from to get axles. You may find that it's a custom built rearend, as many 9" Fords have unequal length axles from the factory, and many get centered when used in hotrods. If you post the OAL of your rearend from drum face to drum face, it can be compared to rearends on this chart, and figure out what might interchange. You'll still need to pull the axles first, so once you find a replacement you can compare it to be sure it's right: http://www.carnut.com/specs/rear.html
We usually relate wheel hop to rigs with rear leaf springs that wrap up and then unwind during hard acceleration off the line. On a lot of those a bystander can actually watch the spring go through it's cycle when the wheel (s) hop Is it possible that your rear 4 link bars are too light weight for the job and that they are flexing like a spring and snapping back? That would be my best guess. . The other things might be the angles that the 4 link is set at or worn rod ends or bushings in the rear suspension.
Wheel hop from one side of vehicle at a specific speed and upward would most likely indicate a balance issue with the tire, wheel or brake drum. If you had an axle that was bent or a wheel that was bent it would show as a wobble not a hop effect. As suggested it is easily checked by jacking up the offending side and spinning the ***embly to check for side to side wobble. Another hidden offender is tire cord damage that does not show as a balance issue until the rotating speed produces enough force to cause deflection in the casing. This is more found in old or tires purchased used and remounted. Since you swapped tires and the problem still exists a check of the brake drum balance would be required. Next question would be if the lug stud pattern was changed on the axles, a out of index bolt pattern will cause a wheel hop as the speed increases and be very difficult to spot. Again do a quick check by jacking the offending side and spin the tire while viewing it from the side for an elliptical run out.
I had what I thought was wheel hop on my Falcon at 60 mph, only to find out it was a worn out motor mount on p***enger side. I chased my tail around wheels, drive shaft, wheel bearings, etc. Always felt like it was coming from the rear. Fixed it with some cheap NOS of ebay. Never would have thought by looking at the old ones, but once off, they were trash.
