  1. OK, I really like the way this color on the wheels shows in the pics.

Via pm, silent rick says its just black with clear. Maybe the sky reflections are causing the reflect highlights.

However the purple highlights in the black are pretty amazing and would like to obtain that effect on a project.

I've done different micas in black and my buddy just did purple mica in black and looks nowhere near these pictures, not even close.

So is there a color out there that is this purplish black ?
Maybe a mid coat purple candy over black?

How would you guys do it or get there?

If someone could be so kind to bring the pics over that would be great .

  2. I think that those wheels are reflecting something but you can get that effect by using a purple pearl on your clear coat.

I've used an HOK UK-10 Purple Kandy over a black "BC-25" base coat, many years ago and the end product was a finish that appeared jet black except in direct sunlight, which it then gave off just a slight purple tint.

The best way to get a purple glow when the lights hit it, is to use purple flip flop pearl OVER a black basecoat. Putting it IN the black will obliterate most of the effect. And be sure to use a true flip pearl, or interference pearl. This is a mica flake that lets the base color show through then reflects a color when light hits it. There are also purple pearl flakes that are just a color purple, you won't get the reflection effect with them.
Purple candy over straight black you might not see at all. Candy really needs a reflective base under it so when the light hits the flakes, it glows up through the candy color, showing the color. You can use candy over a black pearl, or black metallic base, but it is a much more glamourous effect. Not subtle at all.

  6. It might be CA producing the effect and that is a cool link.

I just want to paint it how it looks.

My buddy said it looks similar to blackberry pearl on the newer challengers, similar.but That is more just a blueish version of black cherry .

Those pics are very different, probably why I like it.

  7. Well I calked my local ppg supplier and they can't/won't get me purple flip flop pearl.
Said I would need to pick something from vibrance.

So can you help point me to this stuff Exactly.
And any pics of the much more glamorous vs subtle

I've got pics somewhere, of some different pearls over black, but it would take a while to find them.
In your case, I would get some pearl powder. You can mix it in with clear to top your black. It probably works best with a basecoat type clear (no hardener, like a cut-in or jamb clear), but you can also use it in final clear. So you can use your PPG materials all the way through, with the addition of the powder mixed in with your first coat or 2 of clear.
HOK sells powders, but you'd probably have to buy WAYYY more than you'd ever use.
Sid Moses (Seelig Custom Paint) used to sell just 1 oz. ziplock envelopes of pearl powders. DOn't know if his company is still in business, he p***ed away a year or 2 ago.
If you want some just to try, PM me your street address and I'll throw a teas**** in a ziplock and mail it to you.
If you like it, I might have enough extra to send you for a whole car, as well, and we can work out a price.

i'm leaning more towards this. i know you're looking to paint yours so they look this way to the eye. what do i know, i'm colored blind. i'll get the info from the friend who sprayed them for me. you can always spray yours the same way and leave them leaning up against my garage. i'll keep an eye on them.

One problem with pictures, is that they almost NEVER seem to capture the look of Candy or Pearl, the way our eyes see them in person. Then add to that, the color change your monitor probably makes in showing the pics.
Best thing is to see the color in person, as on a car painted with it, or do some test panels once you get your mind made on what you want, then you fine tune it with different fomulas, mixes, coats, etc. That Vette (?) might be flip flop over black, but either he used too much pearl or too many coats, or it's just the way the light is hitting it that seems to be highlighting the purple too much. Might be subtler in person.

I think I would try some purple tint in black, and see how much tint it takes to get the color/effect you are after. I like dark colors that look black at night (jmo) and black is pretty cheap to experiment with (at least it used to be). Good Luck!

  15. Well just for experiments sake -
I picked up some night shades , sort of like black candy, and some vht metal tint in purple, sort of like a candy purple.

I hit a pepto pink bowl with the candy black.
I hit a royal purple oil bottle with the candy black .
And I hit some black parts with the purple metal .

No sun but the candy black over pepto pink sure looks neat in the shop !
Nothing like the spoked wheels but still pretty neat.

I did a mini truck years ago that was a similar to the corvette what I did on that was use a charcoal grey base with a 4 coats of candy purple over it all house of kolor materials.

  17. So far everyone here loves the , candy black ( night shades) over pepto bismol pink.
Its a very very deep ( like a mile or two) black and under the halogen it glows a deep rich purple. Looks so good I want to take a bite of it. Different than the wheels but pretty damn cool none the less.

Might be a few days before I can see it in the sun though.

  19. well heres the pics.

first pair, close up on the hood is a very accurate representation of what the eyeball sees. done with a 500 watt halogen off then on.

second pair on the table is the camera telling stories and showing much more purple than you really see.

last pic is at the kitchen table normal house lights.

I had a harley that had that same kinda look but with blue. it was black base with blue mica in the clear you may have to do some samples the mica goes along way so start with a little and keep adding until you get what you want.

Black base, silver pearl flip-flop, and your choice of candy for the hue, followed by clear.
It will look very black until the light hits it just right. If you want brighter or more sparkle, use a little heavier gold flake or pearl covered with the candy color.

  23. That pink bowl I used was solid color, wonder how a metalic pink or heavy flaked pink would look ?

Maybe its just me, my personal observations, or lack of them but black paint and anything over top looks funny. Micas in black lose the vibrance of black and candy or pearl over black take the depth away, metalic black looks dirty to me.

Imo The black should be pure and more like a mirror than anything else.

This isnt what you are looking for, and I have never seen it in person, but the photos in the magazine article blew me away. "Blackest" purple I have ever seen. The article says its a late thirties packard color, but I have searched high and low through all kinds of sources, and cant find anything close. I LOVE this color. I can really see it on something with lots of curves, like a '39/'40.
