Solutions mindmeld to prevent theft, phase 1:

    1) Use lojack

    2) use mechanical restraint/devices

    3) Enact/change legislation regarding the punishment of convicted thieves:

    a) Minimum 10 years in prison upon conviction OR the convicted can buy their way out of prison---$100,000 to the state. 2nd offense= 20 years or $200,000 buy out. etc. etc. All sentences are to be served in solitary confinement. In each case loss of license for 10 years minimum, but permanently should be seriously considered.

    b) If a tow truck/rollback is used in the commision of a theft, then immediately upon conviction the truck goes immediately to the victim. 20 years minimum sentence and permanent loss of license. No buyout available 2nd offense 40 years etc.

i would say the main barrier to long term sentencing or even any sentencing at all in cases of car theft would be perceived lack of funding.

i say surplus shipping containers could be utilized as a fast, easy, and expedient way of quickly expanding a prison's capacity.

Also, the concept of solitary confinement should be utilized in greater amounts. Well, really in all cases i think this would be beneficial.

Longer sentences would serve as a deterrent---- if the thief is behind bars s/he cannot steal. Also, some people who are considering theft might be deterred after weighing the risk of imprisonment.

Okay, I'll play this silly game? How much longer? 10 years.... no... 20 years? Now, why should I have to pay taxes, so some fucker who steals cars can watch cable, get 3 meals and a warm place to sleep? Why should my taxes be spent on building extra prisons to house more car thieves... for an extended period of time.

I'd rather put money in a good alarm and support hiring more cops. Car theft is already a crime punishable by jail time. I don't see car thefts going down. They're actually going UP. When some asshole decides to steal a car, he's already prepared to do the time if caught. Added years behind bars aren't a passing thought. That's time to relax and learn a better way to steal.

Paying a fine? How are you going to collect it? Well, I guess the $2.50 he earns a day will add up, but how much is it going to cost to keep this jackass in jail? How about $47,102 a YEAR. Personally, I don't want to keep funding this shit for 20 years.

That's in California 4 years ago, but it's probably close to every other state. The average pay for a cop is only a little better.

So here are suggestions that might work. How about everyone keep thier stuff protected. Stop going into the store for a beer and leaving the keys in the ignition. How about putting an alarm on that pride and joy you treasure so much. Stop parking a $100,000 trailer and being too cheap to hire someone to watch it for the night or weekend. Watch your neighborhood for strangers. Keep an eye out for shady characters. Basicly, start giving a damn about the other guy. Chances are, someone on this site, right now, has seen a violent act and did nothing because they didn't want to be involved. GET INVOLVED! I'm in a neighborhood watch program. It started about 4 years ago due to car thefts. We have not had ONE theft in the last 4 years.

Finally, support legislation that allows you to shoot the fuckers when they get on your property. Take the proactive approach. When word gets out that death could result from being an asshole, THAT will make them at least think twice and that's enough time to call a cop. On the forth of July, my neighbor down the street shoots off his magnum to let everyone know he isn't affraid to take a crunch out of crime. My streets REAL quiet.

and just where does this neighbor's spent bullet wind up? His stunt is exactly why many people distrust gun owners.

i don't believe it costs 50K to house an inmate for a year. Or at least, the costs can be greatly reduced.

Lack of funding or perceived expenses is no excuse to be lenient on criminals.

tfeverfred has it...as an ex harley davidson (many) owner, now turned rodder, I can tell you that the best way is to watch your own stuff like you value it. At home, get to know the neighbour kids, bring them into your shop, teach them shit, they know who's who in the neighbourhood, your neighbours should be your friends, they should know who comes and goes, as should you with them.
When thieves know its hard not to be seen, they go where they can't be seen, thats the truth, when you go in a cafe, sit where you can see it or don't go in the place, lock it on your way into the store, it aint 1960 any more, most theft is a crime of opportunity, we can't always protect ourselves, but you can damn sure try. I live by these rules, lucky, never had anything go missing, I'm an old guy, could happen yet. Remember the neighbourhood kids, they go into the bad kids homes, they listen, hear good shit they don't tell, but if you're right by them, they'll do right by you.
More laws don't work, being proactive does work.

We outsource everything good, maybe it's time to outsource our low life thieves and other non violent criminals to third world countries for pennies on the dollars. Have some of the countries that we now send aid to build mega prisons to hold car thieves and other thieves and the like who funow get off because it's too expensive to keep them or there is no room for them.
Send the buggers off to some five dollar a day prison with no cable tv and no fully equipped gym. Let them eat rice and beans and little else except what their families will pay for on top of what they get. I'd guarantee that the majority of them would figure out how to have a productive life away from crime when they got out.

As far as the car goes: It not only takes keeping it in a secure spot but some other steps.
    1. At least two steps or motions to be able to start it. Extra switch or pushbutton inline to be able to activate the starter when you turn the key to start it or try to bypass the key.
    2. some sort of fuel shut off either electric or mechanical. I had a hell of a time getting one truck I bought to stay running until I traced the fuel line and found a tank switch valve under the seat with the extra holes plugged. turn the handle to another position and once the fuel bowl was empty it quit. A simple dual tank valve off a mid 70's GM pickup and a toggle switch would do the same thing. Switch to the plugged side and it isn't going very far.
    3. Some sort of gps tracking device. As I mentioned in another thread, that outdated smart phone with the scratched up face would be perfect as a tracking device in the car and the cost is about 10.00 a month on most plans. You might want an extra hidden battery like a small motorcycle battery hook it to to keep it charged for more than three or four days that it would normally do but it's doable.

    4. I'll rent out my nut case dog that damned few strangers are going to try to get past.

The US has the highest incarceration rate of all developed nations - how's that working out for you? Yep jail is the answer huh. :)

    Practical advice:
Pull up somewhere -pull rotor cap from dizzy or hidden isolation switch.
At home - as Trollst says re neighbours and as as above but floor mount and heavy chain/lock and insure. Crazy dog is good until it escapes and attacks a neighbour. Noisey dog is better.

Always lots of tough talk on forums but who is REALLY going to shoot someone over a car? Im not.
