If you put your hand on the fuel line, is it really hot in that short time? I'm wondering if you've got some kind of vapor lock problem.

I say the choke is still closed and you need to adjust it.

  4. Rare, but it happens. Coil gets hot and shorts, cools down and works again? Does it have spark? Junk in fuel tank/lines?

  5. All we can give you is general information as we donot know what you are running or how it is arranged.

Try doing this take it for a real drive, maybe half an hour or so then shut it off and try to start it. Sometimes an engine when it is at a certain temp will be hard to start, it falls between being warmed up and cold. I have no idea why and it is not every engine.

It could be that your coil is overheating as has been mentioned I have a good brand name coild here that gave me that problem, it wasn't very old either. you could put your hand on it and it would be hot to the touch. I layed an OHM meter on it and when it was hot it was turning itself into a diode. Only one I ever saw do that and I keep it here because it is an oddity.

  8. Let me make a conjecture here. You are probably not running an automatic choke, so that being the case the choke does not need adjusting.

That being the case we can rule that out, Have you tried pulling the choke when it will not start?

Fuel might be perculating in the carb due to a stuck heat riser.

My first thought is the coil. Is it mounted on the hot engine? Mine was 58 Ply. One day mine would not start and someone took a CO2 fire extiguisher and iced down the coil. It started right up!!! I'd try another known good coil.

Had the exact same problem in a 235 in a 57 chevy truck, turned out to be a fuel pump, ]{ losing prime I guess]. Did not happen every time, but it happened enough to be frustrating.
