I am about to start on what might be the most important build of my life. The goal is to have it ready for the Newport Hillclimb car show in early October 2013. So far, everyone I have talked to about this project has volunteered to help. To give everyone a bit of history....... Dad bought this car in 1970. I remember taking a few rides when I was only 6 or 7 years old. He had a terrible overheating problem from day one. It was later decided to change things around and put in a bit more modern engine and running gear. No matter how hard he has tried, something would always get in the way of putting it back on the road. Keep in mind we are talking about over 40 years of putting his family first, waiting for his chance to finally be able to drive his car. It's Time. Here are a few pics of it's trip to my shop. Anyone care to guess what it is?
Dad has made several trips to get all of the remaining parts to the shop. We have to start somewhere so he started taking the fun stuff off of the engine to give it some new color.
I'll go with Pontiac even though it looks more like a '29 with the visor??? Tell us your plans and be sure and keep us posted.
Not a Pontiac but I can see what you're thinking. I'll add more tonight. You got it! Close. Rockne? Never heard of one. Thanks!
Thanks Flowmeister. I have followed your COE build for a while now. Nice! I'm headed to my parents for an early Christmas today. I'll ask the family if there are any pictures of the Hupp's past still around.
I went to my parents to join four generations of family for the holiday.Talk of this build filled the air at times. When I mentioned pictures, Dad grabbed his wallet like a cowboy grabbing a six shooter and said "here's one." From the wear on the picture and the stock condition of the car, I think he has carried it around for over 40 years. He dug up a few more a bit later in the day of his trip to the World Series in 1960. With the help and some parts from a few friends they took this car.... And turned it in to this, in less than a week. And went racing.....this is just one of the bedtime stories I grew up with. It's no wonder I turned out like I did.
What an awesome Hupmobile, that body is super sweet. Congrats and good luck for the hill climb. ~sololobo~
I told Dad we would get all of the hard stuff out of the way first. We never dreamed we would start the year off like this. He started pulling everything off the engine so we could blow off the dust and give it a fresh coat of paint. This is what we found. Next thing you know, my air compressor started making a noise. It was still over 20 hours till the next service was due but we all agreed to try it and listen again. No luck. Behind schedule but we need air pressure to do nearly everything in the shop. I tore it apart before I thought about a back up. Turns out the outer bearing shield gave up and caused the crank to chew up everything inside while it was off center. Ouch! I called a few friends and found a backup. I'll add a pic of R2D2 tomorrow.
Here is our new little trooper. Keep in mind, it may look like a big boy in the pic, but it's only a bit over waist high.
We got the compressor back up and running. More good news, our powder coat company called. MORE TOYS!
I had a chance to spend quite a bit of time with Dad this week. We agreed the 31 needed to be moved to the operating room, but there was a space issue to make it fit and still have room work. We cleaned out a corner and stuffed it in. We needed a bit more room in front so Dad took the back bumper off. Nice fit! A special thanks to all you clowns that helped..... and I didn't get a picture of Rod's hat. CRAP!
